Claudius Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 Greetings; Just like there is a list of MM for EKs, is there a list, or thread of all of the different EK1 attachment systems? Everything from; hinged straight pin to simple hook screw back -1 piece screw back -2 piece screw back -clam shell hinged Godet pin and hook w/ two open pins on the cross arms hinged straight pin to hook with hinged closure clasp on hook etc. etc. etc. Did anyone ever assemble a list of the different variants? with photos? Thank you in advance.
Eric Stahlhut Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 claudius, a few years ago, one of our fellow members contacted me about one of his projects, and asked me to participate. he published 2 volumes dealing exclusively with the subject of the 1914 ek1. a total of approximately 1150 pages of pictures, descriptions, and info on the myriad of makers. however, the text is in russian. an excellent compilation!
joe campbell Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 1150 pages!! DA-YAM!!!! i'm going to have to learn russian, or get it translated. just on '14 EK 1's ... wow.

Uhmmmmm....yeah, Joe adequately sums up my thoughts as well. I did not realize that compilation study on the matter was that big. Thank you Eric for the illumination.
gregM Posted December 7, 2011 Posted December 7, 2011 I don't know of a real "list" but here is a photo showing several different variations.
erickn Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Hi Greg, One picture is as good as a thousand words. Great image. E.
Claudius Posted December 8, 2011 Author Posted December 8, 2011 I don't know of a real "list" but here is a photo showing several different variations. Great picture. and the clasp system I'm thinking of isn't even shown here.
Eric Stahlhut Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 claudius, which attachment system were you thinking of? greg, awesome selection of crosses, btw!
Claudius Posted December 8, 2011 Author Posted December 8, 2011 claudius, which attachment system were you thinking of? Hard to described. Easy to see. It's a premium device that is found on the nicer badges. On a standard hinged pin and hook clasp arrangement, the hook as an extra "device" that prevents the pin from backing out of the hook by accident. It is attached near the base of the hook by a hinge so the wearer can fold it down to keep the pin in place, and then fold it back up to unhook the pin.
Eric Stahlhut Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 do a search for K.M.S.T. ek1's.... i have posted several examples, and i know that other members have also posted a fair amount of this type. this type of attachment system is also found on wound badges, but they are considered extremely rare!

Found it! Thank you Eric. http://gmic.co.uk/index.php/topic/46665-unfortunate-kmst-14-ek1/page__hl__kmst__fromsearch__1 My question: WHEN was this type of clasp system used. DURING wwi, or was it AFTER wwi (1919-1934+)? Basically, is KMST's design a wartime piece or post war? Thank you.
saschaw Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Basically, is KMST's design a wartime piece or post war? A good question you raise and I'm not sure anyone has yet found a definite answer. In my humble opinion, most of them are war time. The "K." in "K.M.ST." stands for royal, so that might indeed be a hint. They're private purchase luxury crosses anyway.
Graf Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 Hi, This is the rarest locking system ..in my opinion
gregM Posted December 25, 2011 Posted December 25, 2011 I agree. It's one I'm still hoping to add to the pile.
Eric Stahlhut Posted December 25, 2011 Posted December 25, 2011 i dunno, the system on the cross shown on my avatar is pretty rare as well! i have only seen two examples in all of my collecting years
Eric Stahlhut Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 got some more ryker boards for christmas... so far, i have put about 100 different makers/attachment systems/ cores of 1914 ek1 crosses in them....
