    There is a photo in Kraus's "Die feldgraue Uniformierung des deutschen Heeres 1907-198" that shows Prussian Infantryman wearing a Felkdrock with a number 5 in the same location and Kraus called the arm insignia improvised.

    It is definitely a "4". I have never seen a number stensiled on a WW1 tunic before. Have you all?

    I don't think it's stenciled. The photo in Kraus and this one show sewn-on numbers, which are (I believe) die cut Pickelhaube cover numbers. They have the same size and style of number.
