Chris Boonzaier
This may just be a mark on the negative, but it DOES look like a "4"... or even an ace of spades?

Joe Sweeney
Chris, There is a photo in Kraus's "Die feldgraue Uniformierung des deutschen Heeres 1907-198" that shows Prussian Infantryman wearing a Felkdrock with a number 5 in the same location and Kraus called the arm insignia improvised. The Prussian
Hi Chris! I agree with the "four". Unfortunately I don´t have any idea for that....
Chris Boonzaier
HI, It may have to do with "Gun 4" in an MG Unit? Full photo is here... http://www.kaiserscross.com/246801/432122.html
Paul R
It is definitely a "4". I have never seen a number stensiled on a WW1 tunic before. Have you all?
Chip
I don't think it's stenciled. The photo in Kraus and this one show sewn-on numbers, which are (I believe) die cut Pickelhaube cover numbers. They have the same size and style of number. Chip
