Noor Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 Hi all, Just a quick one - I know that the pictures are not the best but how that medal looks like - good or bad? Regards, Noor
Paul R Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 Maybe it is just the lighting/angle, but I am not liking the details in the obverse.
Ferdinand Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 (edited) Gentlemen, these pictures are much too small. Please post large, clear photos of the obverse and reverse at a straight angle (no need to show the suspension). I think it's a good one though. P.S. Why have people come up with words like "Transarctic" and "Transpolar" to translate the name of this medal? It's just "Arctic" or "Polar Region". I know the "Za" particle can be confusing, but this medal has nothing to do with extending across or crossing the North Pole. Transarctic isn't even a real noun. Edited July 14, 2013 by Ferdinand

Because some people don't know English, let alone Russian so the translation gets destroyed lol (this is meant to be a joke, don't go all crazy on me people lol ) Edited July 14, 2013 by Rogi
JapanX Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 P.S. They are simply using dictionary Заполярный - a) polar b) trans-polar Both variants are possible since Заполярье — область от полярного круга до полюса в Северном и Южном полушариях. Trans-polar - extending across or crossing either of the Polar Regions. I am afraid that linguistic purist could choose trans-polar variant P.S. The medal looks like original piece. War vintage.
JapanX Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 (edited) Transarctic variant of course is the worst one ... Maybe they are using it because of this wiki article? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medal_%22For_the_Defence_of_the_Soviet_Transarctic%22 And again online dictionary http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/transarctic Although many English-Russian dictionaries will give us simple translation Transarctical = трансарктический Another variant of translation is also possible (and some online translators will agree) Transarctical = заполярный since russian dictionaries define трансарктический as прил., по знач. связанное с сообщением через арктическую или вообще полярную область. Paul R Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 OK. I am liking the last set of photos. I do not see any issues.

SergioV Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 There is someone who has the rare documents with the signatures of the President and Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Murmansk City Council of Deputies?
rocketscientist Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 There is someone who has the rare documents with the signatures of the President and Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Murmansk City Council of Deputies? If I had it, I would not even be in position to recognise it. Any pictures?
Ferdinand Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 I don't have any myself, but the third document from the bottom on this page is the city of Murmansk variation: http://mondvor.narod.ru/MObZapl.html It's easily recognizable by the dual signatures at the bottom (by the Chairman and Secretary). There's also a variation for the Murmansk Oblast instead of the city of Murmansk, which is the second document from the bottom. Both variations were awarded to civilians who took part in the defense of the polar region.
rocketscientist Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 Thank you for the clarification. To my eye, they couldn't be distinguished from any other Polar Award document. I have checked for the double signatures, and I have none like that in my collection.
SergioV Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 yes Ferdinand is right, the third document on mondvor website is what i was searching
