filfoster Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 (edited) OK, I suppose this will be 'duck soup' for our British members. What Orders, specifically neck decorations/collars, breast stars and medals does George V wear on his Fleet Admiral and Field Marshal rigs? I'm guessing the neck gongs are the Military Bath GC and the collar is the Victorian Order, but who can see well enough to know for sure? The breast stars here are the Garter and the Military Bath GC; On his Fleet Admiral uniform he often wore the Star of India star and another breast star I can't make out. The medal bar appears to have some very odd/rare things. Edited August 26, 2020 by filfoster 1
Great Dane Posted August 26, 2020 Posted August 26, 2020 I would like to have a look, but that is a very tiny photo...
JapanX Posted August 26, 2020 Posted August 26, 2020 This photo was made somewere around April-May 1931. August 1926. 1
filfoster Posted August 26, 2020 Author Posted August 26, 2020 (edited) Thanks, Japan X. These are much better. I am confident that the collar is the GCVO but the upper neck order could be a Grand Commander of the Order of the Bath or a Guelphic Order. I'd guess the former. Medal bar? I can guess a few. I see a St George/St Michael and Victorian Order, and perhaps a Star of India; Probably a Military Bath at the far left. AT this date, near the right, he'd have 'pip, squeak and Wilfred', the WW1 trio, wouldn't he? Edited August 26, 2020 by filfoster
Great Dane Posted August 26, 2020 Posted August 26, 2020 There's a OBE in there too. Interesting that he had all the mentioned orders 'represented' on his breast bar, as I assume he was Grand Cross in all of them.

oamotme Posted August 26, 2020 Posted August 26, 2020 Gentlemen, An attempt at identifying the first image medal bar: Order of the Bath Military Order of the Star of India Order of St. Michael & St. George Order of Indian Empire Royal Victorian Order Order of British Empire Imperial Service Order 1914-15 Star Great War Medal Great War Victory Medal 1887 Jubilee Medal + 1897 Clasp 1902 Coronation Kind regards, Owain 1
filfoster Posted August 26, 2020 Author Posted August 26, 2020 oamotme: That's impressive! I can't make them all out but that's the answer for now. Thank you. I will have to research that Imperial Service Order. Haven't seen one and want to know more about it. I'll get me Spinks out.
P.F. Posted August 26, 2020 Posted August 26, 2020 Here is a slightly clearer picture of his medal bar. 1
filfoster Posted August 26, 2020 Author Posted August 26, 2020 (edited) P.F., thanks for this picture. This seems to follow the medals suggested by Oamotme, no? Edited August 27, 2020 by filfoster

oamotme Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 P.F., Thanks for the clearer picture - I think my ID's are correct. By the way the 'collar' is not a 'collar' rather it is the Royal Victorian Chain and I believe the neck badge is the Order of the Bath (Military Division) to accompany the lower breast star. Regards, Owain 1

filfoster Posted August 28, 2020 Author Posted August 28, 2020 My personal thanks to all who contributed. I think this has been 'nailed down'.
JapanX Posted August 28, 2020 Posted August 28, 2020 21 hours ago, oamotme said: By the way the 'collar' is not a 'collar' rather it is the Royal Victorian Chain ... George V's Royal Victorian Chain He got it on August 9, 1902. Source. 1
filfoster Posted August 28, 2020 Author Posted August 28, 2020 Didn't his own son, the future George V also receive the chain?
JapanX Posted August 28, 2020 Posted August 28, 2020 Royal Victorian Order doesn`t have chain/collar https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Victorian_Order Royal Victorian Chain is a separate award https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Victorian_Chain
filfoster Posted August 29, 2020 Author Posted August 29, 2020 On a further link of recipients, I do see George V, awarded the chain by his father Edward VII.
Ynsman Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 (edited) I believe the Bath neck badge is that of the Great Master of the order, distinguished by having a crown above the badge, and now worn by Prince Charles, see (there wrongly captioned Grand Master's badge) Edited August 30, 2020 by Ynsman (better link) 1
filfoster Posted September 1, 2020 Author Posted September 1, 2020 (edited) Yes. So, altogether, George V is wearing some pretty unique stuff, befitting his status as monarch and also making it pretty tough to recreate, at a reasonable cost, for a display. Edited September 1, 2020 by filfoster
oamotme Posted September 1, 2020 Posted September 1, 2020 I wonder how his Great War Medals are named? 'H.M. King George V'? Owain
filfoster Posted September 1, 2020 Author Posted September 1, 2020 ...or HRM The Prince of Wales, depending when he got them? Would they be named at all?
