lew Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 There're plenty of good stuffs on ebay and I'm pretty sure many of us are interested in buying, maybe it's better to post them after the auction ends just to avoid ruining anyone's purchasing plan. 1

You have a point there. However, there are so many fakes about on ebay it is better to know what is genuine before you make a costly bid on something that isn't. Stogieman Posted December 19, 2023 Author Posted December 19, 2023 Well, members are free to do as they wish, I think both points are pretty valid. There is a separate fakes thread I started

VtwinVince Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 Some of the component parts look fake to me, and the bizarre way in which the Elefant has been swapped in.
Stogieman Posted December 20, 2023 Author Posted December 20, 2023 Well, I’m going to disagree with you this time, the bar looks good to me. I don’t think the Elephant Order was swapped in, just mounted on the Afrika ribbon
lew Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 (edited) All medals and ribbons on that Colonial bar look fine to me, the KO4x seems to have some parts of the swords repaired so both screwed and soldered sword parts are visible. The elephant badge pinned on Afrika colonial medal ribbon is certainly unusual but makes sense, IMO not necessarily a bad sign, it would be a bold move and require some imagination for an ordinary faker to do so. Same for the KO4X on white ribbon combination. Another thing I particularly like on this bar is the double rosette ribbon folding, consistent quality and finely made. Only thing I don't like is the look of the catch, wired type with rough cut, but not necessarily a deal breaker IMO. Edited December 21, 2023 by lew
Stogieman Posted December 21, 2023 Author Posted December 21, 2023 Thanks for the additional images, I stand by my impression that the bar is fine
lew Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 (edited) I want to make one exception to post an ongoing auction of a ribbon bar because this one belongs to the full size bar auctioned earlier this month, broken up and listed by the same seller. If anyone here bought the big bar please don't miss the chance of completing the group. Edited December 21, 2023 by lew
VtwinVince Posted December 21, 2023 Posted December 21, 2023 Based on those images I think that bar stands a good chance.

Schießplatzmeister Posted December 22, 2023 Posted December 22, 2023 Hello All, The Sachsen Albert Order Grand Cross Star by "Elimeyer" listed above is most-likely a modern forgery that has been attributed to the now deceased Mr. Blass. These forgeries have been around for a while now. Genuine pieces are seldom encountered. The Andreas Thies auction house sold a genuine example many years ago. If I remember correctly, that genuine piece came from the George Seymour collection. Best regards,
Stogieman Posted December 22, 2023 Author Posted December 22, 2023 Thanks for your insight on the Albert Star!!
lew Posted December 22, 2023 Posted December 22, 2023 (edited) Thanks for the information, that makes it a pretty scary fake! Detailed pics are still there before ebay take them down. https://www.ebay.de/itm/296057676479 Edited December 22, 2023 by lew
VtwinVince Posted December 23, 2023 Posted December 23, 2023 Blass is a name which constantly turns up, and not in a good way. I'm stuck with a couple of obscure fakes by him.
Christian1962 Posted December 23, 2023 Posted December 23, 2023 @Vince: It´s no shame at all. Blass was one of the most "genius" fakers, with a colorful bouquet of fakes which are still displayed in some museums. In the 1980ties he was engaged with one of the Rothe & Neffe sisters - just to have access to the large store of embossing tools and dies. She realized his ambition short before their marriage and kicked him off. Regards Christian
