The 4.bavarian Reichswehr Inf.Rgt.46 came from the following Freikorps: I.Bataillon Bamberg: Freikorps Bamberg (Regiment Leupold) and I.-III.Btl./Inf.Rgt.5 Bamberg II.Bataillon Bamberg: Eiserne Schar Berthold (fränkisches Bauerndetachement) III.Bataillon Bayreuth: Freikorps Bayreuth (bav. Inf.Rgt.7) I don´t believe the "Sch" stands for "Schar" from the "Eiserne Schar" (Iron crowd) I don´t know if crowd is the right word for "Schar"... I think that 'Schar' can be roughly translated as 'squad' or 'platoon'. I've seen the badge before. I'm pretty sure it's Freikorps. But, it's not documented. I just noticed the mg is pointing to the right not left on the badge, there is a US military intelligence report prepared for the war department on German abbreviations from W1 through '43 a 'Sch' could just be for scharfschütze, just a thought its something more simple. Chris Boonzaier Posted December 21, 2014 Share Posted December 21, 2014 Lets not forget, the term "Schütze" was the equivelent rank of "Private" for MG troops. It could simply be a qualification badge.... like Richtschütze.... Not everyone in an MG Unit was a qualified MG Schütze... some just carried ammo cans... so "Schütze" could very well be his qualification. A more current example of doing this are some of the French qualification badges where the actual qualification can be read on the badge... i.e. "Pointeur" or "Instructeur" or "Chef de Piece" on the new 81mm Mortar badges... If a soldier is a (for instance) Gunner, he is a gunner as Private, and as Captain.... same way a qualified machine Gunner stays a qualified MG Schütze, even when promoted. We could spend time on weather he is a MG "Scharfschütze" or "Schütze" but remember, the soldiers of MGSSA in the war were also "Schütze Schmidt" as opposed to "Scharfschütze Schmidt"....
