The Wiki Page mentions this tradition... Im Gegensatz zur Linieninfanterie, welche mit dem Bajonett ausgerüstet war, trugen die Jäger den Hirschfänger als Seitenwehr. Dieser wurde nicht aufgepflanzt, sondern diente nur als blanke Seitenwaffe. Typisch war, dass die Jäger das Gewehr nicht wie die Infanterie übergehängt über die rechte Schulter trugen, sondern in der Jägertrageweise unter dem rechten Arm mit dem Gewehrriemen über der Schulter, so dass die Laufmündung nach vorne zeigte. Hi, A Hirschfänger is a very traditional hunting knife/Short sword indeed... Many of the "Clamshells" are Hirschfänger... I think for a Jäger Battalion it would be a very logical battalion level award. Best Chris

Hi, "Lebel Bayonet" is the standard name for these, nicknamed the "Rosalie" by the French soldiers. They were initially designed for the Lebel, but the Berthier 07/15 took them as well. Best Chris

My limited Officer Info gives me 2 Wilhelm von hadeln.... – Ernennung des Majors [Wilhelm Carl] v. Hadeln zum Direktor der Militärschule, 1842 - Another was the one born in 1827, was at some stage in Kurhessische Jäger-Bataillon Nr.11 another was apparently present at the Battle of tannenberg.... Does anyone have any info about one in WW1 ? Thanks Chris

Hi, Thanks, here is one of our members great uncles... the info they had is "Max Duttlinger. Killed in the battle of Mont Sorrel on 2 June, 1916." From the lists I see he was Missing in action, I suppose listed as killed at a later date. He was in the 12th Company....
