      Hi, The blockade breaker was a late award, but dates from the beginning of the war, partially prewar time. He was on one of the Navy supply ships for the battleships that left german waters just before the outbreak of the war. He was on the Westerwald. They were disguised as a Norweigian ship.

        Why do you ask? ; ) This made me think of the oldest vets I've ever met. Aside from meeting and knowing many WWI vets in the past, I met a man from NY who served in the US Cav. on the Mexican border; had never ridden a horse and he was assigned to the cav.
