Mervyn, I would love to see two posts a week on this topic. I have some things to post but finding the time is always the problem. I'll see what I can come up with by this weekend. We have just returned from two weeks holidays and the other forums I moderate need some attention as well. Regards, Gordon -
Bundesrepublik 57er U-Boot ribbon bar
Gordon Craig replied to Arthur Spooner's topic in Germany: Post 1945: Bundesrepublik & DDR
Arthur Spoon, Congratulations on your work in keeping these two bars together. Too many people are not interested in saving history, as you mentioned in your post. Regards, Gordon -
AlecH, Jaeger units were riflemen and have a long history in the German military. While they could be found in association with Moutain troops they were not trained in mountain warfare. Some independamt Jaeger battalions were raised on the eastern front and were at the disposal at army level and could be used as raiding battalions or in counter espionage activities. Jaeger Divisions were equipped as "Light Divisions". As a light division it was more portable that a normal infantry division. However, during the war some infantry divisions were converted to Jaeger divisions and the line dividing one from the other became blurred. Regards, Gordon

Bundesrepublik Post 1945 German Quiz
Gordon Craig replied to Hauptmann's topic in Germany: Post 1945: Bundesrepublik & DDR
Gentlemen, It would appear that no one wants to attempt to answer the quiz question so I will end it with the answer. The badge is called the Komandantenabzeichen. It is worn on the right breast, in the location shown in the picture above, by the commanding officers of warships. It is worn on the left breast by officers who have commanded warships in the past. It is also available as a bullion badge. Regards, Gordon -

Bundesrepublik Post 1945 German Quiz
Gordon Craig replied to Hauptmann's topic in Germany: Post 1945: Bundesrepublik & DDR
Gentlemen, Looks as though I may have killed this quizz with my last question. Sorry about that. Dan has given me or Naxos the option to restart the quizz I will do so now. A simpler question this time with only one answer. What does the badge in the picture below indicate when worn on the wearers right side of their tunic? The flash makes the badge appear to be silver but it is actually gold and only exists in this colour. Regards, Gordon -

Uwe, A few months ago, on the BRD Forum of the WAF, we discussed this reservist cord. Actually, the one on the uniform this picture came from. Another forum member made a post to the thread, and quoted a BW reference, that indicated this cord was only worn by reservists "without an assignment". I could not find the thread again, nor the reference he quoted. It doesn't appear in ZdV 37/10 either. Do you remember this thread? Did you take part? Regards, Gordon -

Naxos, Thanks for your response. Your answer is partly correct. All Reservists do not wear this braided cord only some specific ones. Perhaps you would complete your response? Regards, Gordon -

Gordon Craig replied to Grant Broadhurst's topic in Germany: Post 1945: Bundesrepublik & DDR
Dan, I haven't had time to dig out my cuffbands. I have to make an unexpected trip to Calgary tomorrow and I've had to use all of my available time to get ready for that. I'll be home early in August and I'll try to respond then. Regards, Gordon -

Italy - NAVY VISOR CAP
Gordon Craig replied to SICHERHEITSDIENTS's topic in Southern European & Balkan States
Elmar, Interesting comments. I didn't know that the Italian Republic adopted the Mural crown in 1946. I looked up the Roamn Mural Crown and it made very interesting reading. Regards, Gordon -
The cotton embroidered strips. They measure 54mm long by 7mm wide. The distance from the right shoulder seam to the top of the slanted stripes is approximately 185mm. Regards, Gordon
