Interesting that his biography is on googlebooks too AND that he served in the Union army briefly during the civil war in a militia unit at UPenn.. Just imagine HIS medal bar had he lived to say, 1930! I expect he'd have put his US civil war campaign medal at the end of the bar, in front of the Hungarian commemorative, but behind the Kyfserbund medal. Thanks for the link Mike. I mean a book all about ALL Czech medals and awards during the Communist era-similar to the one Charles has just brought out about Hungarian medals.

The Arringtons Bookshop of Wells, Maine has the grouping and it included a shot of his grave as I recall. I think he was buried "im Feld". The Arringtons also presently has THE BEST German soldiers in China photo album I have ever seen(1907-1910): pictures so crisp and clear as to be almost HD. If I were a rich man....

There were at least four to Captain Costa J. and maybe six. I only bid on the Czech Partisan badge doc., the Iceland Order of the Falcon doc. and the Ethiopian doc.. He also got the San Marino Order of St. Agatha (3rd class) and the Venezualen Order of Francisco De Miranda (11/11/1973)

The mystery deepens- in rummaging about random Sardinian officers' names on google images I have discovered that two Sardinian officers charges with the Light Brigade at Balaclava and there wear number of other Italian officers and men present at the battle. Even more exciting, portraits of Captain (later general minister) Gorvone show him wearing a Crimean (British) medal-with three clasps. Purportedly allied soldiers did not receive clasps, but apparently some obtained them.

ah ha!! Thanks to JK Militaria!! All issued named, some fakes (spangenstuck?) are out there. Apparently some are seen with unofficial clasps and these are viewed with some caution.

It appears as if this thread is a repeat of the thread from last year-grammar, punctuation and all. Specifics regarding the sale of faked Easter/Irish War medals are always welcome and valuable. For example, who is making them, who is selling them, details of the medals etc. etc.. Objects d'art sold knowingly as fakes while purporting to be original objects is fraud. The local police can take a look if you can take along the medal and the details of the fraudulent purchase. There is also always recourse to small claims court. For more details one can view the earlier thread. However, if this thread turns into another rambling, generalized complaint session going nowhere, I'll lock it up.

I have Gillinghams' book and it merely described the medal. Almost no other details were given therein. The book says the Italian medal was issued to Piedmontese troops who served in the campaign, was authorized in October, 1856 and used the (British)Crimean ribbon, although some authorities also stated it had the red/white/green national colours as a ribbon. The Italian Order of Battle is excellent.

I don't believe there was a French medal for the Crimean campaign; they used the British campaign medal instead. The French were quite generous with Medal Militaire and Legion d'honner awards though in recompense. If the Italians used the same ribbon as the British, then the portrait I saw of general Verde does NOT show a Sardinian campaign medal-alas! There are upwards of 60,000 unissued British style Turkish Crimean medals in 60 fathoms off the coast of Malta-probably still on the sandy floor of the Med. just waiting for someone to hoover them up. The ship went down in 1860 on the way to london. I reckon with todays' prices that's $5,000,000 worth of treasure just waiting there.

It appears so. Haywards' article is specific in that the Crimean medals were unnamed. However, ALL of the British Crimean medals were originally issued unnamed. Many were later named either by the regiment or otherwise. The article also states that casualties were impressed. Victoria seems to have awarded the medals at Horse Guards in May, 1855 and they arrived in the Crimea itself in September, 1855-just before Sevastopol fell. Do you have a picture of the Italian medal at all Elmar?
