Hello Gents, I have the opportunity to purchase this Luftwaffe Pilot/Observer badge. It has the 900 silver stamp to the reverse and what looks like a recipients initials stamped on the back also... I was thinking it was a private purchase item as there is no maker mark on it... Please let me know what you think! Cheers Paul

Hello Gents, Some superb examples shown here! thanks gents! Heres my only example...an unmarked zinc. any ideas on the maker? Cheers Paul -
Hello Marcus, Thanks for your time to reply. Hmm, well its obvious to you, to ba a fake as i can see by the points you make. ( and some research i did ) Strangely enough, this EK and packet was part of a lot that ( wait for it) came from Samoa!!! with a lot of political items..see this thread, http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=7537 I am wondering what the Germans were doing in Samoa...the person i got them off, and has the political items along with a large flag and had alot of other items which he has since sold...said that he got them off an old lady some 15 yrs ago...and that she had said that this lot had come from Samoa... Now i know its a strange place to find Nazi stuff, but why would a little old lady want to BS him with a story like that..if it wasn't true??? The mind boggles! So as you can see...i am puzzled when this packet comes up as fake...as i would imagine that the fakes would not have been in Samoa in WWII... Food for thought eh! Cheers Paul

hi Don, Nice collection! I have an EKII and Hyffhauser pair just like that one! Cheers Paul

Darrell, Please tell me how you think this is a repo... Stogie, the colour is faded with age or Sun...its normally the blueish-grey colour...from looking inside the packet... And thanks to Bill And Dave for showing theirs! Dave, your one clearly shows the same die flaws...In fact it loks exactly like mine! very Interesting indeed! makes me wonder if these 2 were late war strikes and Bills one was early war.... Thanks Gents Paul

EK 1914 1813 EK2 grouping.
notned replied to Gordon Williamson's topic in Germany: All Eras: The Iron Cross
Gordon, Awesome group! thanks for sharing! Re the rust...i seem to remember that there is a special blackening stuff you can buy ..it treats and kills the rust and at the same time blackens the metal...cannot for the life of me remember the name of the stuff...but i have seen the results of it on various metals and it works! Might just be the thing for arresting the rust on these treasures...with out any damage... will find out and keep you posted.. Regards Paul -

Hello Gents, Am venturing into this forum....( usually you will find me holed up in the Imperial forum) Have bought a nice EKII with a very tatty packet today...the paket does not have any makers stamp on the reverse...unfortunately... The EK is maker marked 122 for JJ. Stahl Strassburg, and has the original as issued full length ribbon still on it! Has not been cut up by some mad bugger! In nice condition..some rust to the core...the frame exhibits die flaws on both left and right arms.. Has anyone else got a 122 cross to compare this with? sorry for the bad scan....must get a decent camera..and take a pic or two.. Its a nice cross in hand... Enjoy! Regards Paul

WW1 and WW2 Commonwealth Groupings
notned replied to a topic in Great Britain: Orders, Gallantry, Campaign Medals
Gents, Here is a nice set i picked up today...coundn't resist! Awarded to 204600 Able Seaman Alexander Andrew Gibson RN the Long service and good conduct medal has HMS Acteon after his name I went to the National archives and found that he was born on 18 January 1882, Minster in Kent. Served on many ships from 1899 when he joined up. Ships like; HMS Northhampton HMS Calliope HMS Pembroke 1 HMS Nildura ( not entirely sure on this one..could be spelling) HMS Wildfire HMS Forward HMS Halcyon HMS Hecla ???? HMS Dunedin And a couple of others that i cannot read clearly... Was pensioned off in 1921 Wanted to get his medal index card ...but all the Nat archives gave me was two pages of the Ships he served on..no reference to his medals or his LSGC. Has anyone got any info on HMS Acteon??? Nice group tho... Enjoy! -

Thanks Ralph! I have seen a trend in Bavarian bars to have the ribbon-esque type of backing...instead of the usual felt or cloth backing... must have been a readily available fabric ( read.. cheap)...so thats what they used. My bar has really puffed up ribbons in the typical Bavarian style... Has anyone else got some nice bars with these medals on to show...for the different types of ribbon folding and the reverse coverings..? Keep them coming gents!

Thankyou Gentlemen for your constructive replies. Yes Christian, thats what i had thought... Rick, thanks for that little gem of information, more info for the memory banks! Ralph, thankyou also for showing the differences mentioned by RR, it puts it in perspective., by the way...nice bars! may i ask to see the reverses please?

And lastly this funny little Frack bar...with the Khyffhauserbund ribbon which should originally have the medal with it...but a HK, ( strangely enough no maker mark on it...)has been sewn in place of the Khyffhauserbund medal..... Still a nice tidy bar...the vet must have been a bit Scrooge like and just stuck the HK in instaed of visiting the Tailor proper like... Never mind...its all fun and a part of the slippery slope.... Cheers Gents Paul

Evening Gents, This lovely bar arrived in the post! Simply magnificent! One thing i learnt today...is that the Bavarian DA is available in two classes...II and III This bar has the II class in a gold type of wash...whereas the III class is Silver..... The MVK...is this whats known as a MVK 2nd class? mit schwertern??? The EK is maker marked "Z" or is it "N"?? the HK marked PSL in a circle A keeper! for sure as its got a nice felt backing...and the bar is vaulted to fit the wearers chest
