    1. Hello Jock. Nice piece made by a well regarded manufacturing company , KPM ( established by King Fredrick II or also called the Great ) for the HAPAG shipping company which operated a number of KDF liners. The DAF under Dr. Ley did indeed establish the KdF ( Kraft durch Freude or Strength through Joy ) and directed its activities. Bernhard H. Holst
    2. Hello Jock. I like this one better in design and such. Thanks for showing this one also. Bernhard H. Holst
    3. Hello Jock. And there they are the heads of the four countries making up the Mittelmaechte until 1916 when Franz Joseph died. Thanks for showing this piece which survived the last 100 years of upsets and what have you. Bernhard H. holst
    4. Hello Jock. I am quite sure some legal requirement made it necessary to emboss these rank pips in this way. Party and included formations such as SA and SS, DJ and HJ had the RZM stamped uniform components to demonstrate compliance with manufacturing procedures and quality. Military uniform components did not use such markings as RZM ( Reichszeugmeisterei was strictly party affiliated to my understanding). Later collector oriented interest as you know never play a role in the manufacturing process. I just stepped off the soapbox!! Bernhard H. Holst
    5. Hello Pete. Thank you for updating this posting. From my end nothing could be added. I appreciate that my account was essentially correct so my memory still served me well. The Wohlsdorf locale is known to both my wife and me. Now I wonder how he escaped from the plane? Was it still high enough for crew to use a chute? And that followed by a more severe failure causing the plane to crash? We may never quite know. I wish you much success with your endeavor and wish that you would be so kind to advise the interested readership when your work may be completed and the possibility to view it also. Bernhard H. Holst
    6. Hello Edwina. On page 21 should be listed (per heading ) any additional training and/or courses ( sonstige Ausbildung und Lehrgaenge ) attended. Here the man was given leave to work in defense/armament industry from 31.10.40 - 1.5.41 under a certain program indicated as Ru ( u Umlaut ). As you saw earlier some other readers are willing and able to help. Bernhard H. Holst
    7. Hello Gordon. I should have been more precise in my comments about German Forces stationed in Norway following the German capitulation in 1945. The Iron Cross etc awards post capitulation I have come across were for army personnel engaged in mine clearing on land. Most likely their own mine fields installed to protect coastal and other defense installations. I have no information under whose command German navy minesweepers operated in Norwegian waters post capitulation. However British and Norwegian Forces supervised the internment so that any sea water mine clearing operations very likely would have been under British control ( having already a large mine sweeping organization in place ). The awards grouping , Oblt.z.S. Fock I referred to was stationed in the greater Bremen area post-war and most likely sweeping in the German Bight and North Sea areas. His award was based on wartime actions in the Baltic Sea. I hope I did not muddy up the water even more... Bernhard H. Holst
    8. Hello Edwina. Page 34: 12.2.1942 - 16.3.1942 Lazarettaufenthalt wegen Durchschuss liker Unterkiefer Tregbowo. Page 25; Am 6 Dezember 1939 entlassen, gesund und entlassen g.f. (?) 9. Hello Chris. Iron Crosses and also Wound Badges were awarded in Norway for mine clearing and suffered wounds through that after the capitulation. This practice was against prevailing orders and such from the Doenitz government. German forces in Norway remained under an organized German command for some time. I have a German Cross i.G. group to mine sweeper captain who continued that job after May 1945. Sadly not many documents regarding that are included. I do remember seeing members of that service on shore ( of course) who in my recollection were quite smart in appearance. Bernhard H. Holst BTW: Lapland Shield was also awarded ( without the Swastika ) BHH
    10. Hello Edwina. I cannot read Staraja Russja or similar in that ( Staraja Russja was mentioned often in reports then). I G or A G stands for Infanterie Geschoss and A G for Artillerie Geschoss ( or shell splinters ). A Healthy New Year to you, Bernhard H. Holst
    11. Hello Edwina. Place name ?/Russland I am unable to decipher the location/place name. Signed by ? Ofw ( Oberfeldwebel) und Kompaniefuehrer Unable to read the name. Of note is the notation/signature by an Oberfeldwebel as company commander which indicates the unit must have experienced heavy losses. Bernhard H. Holst
    12. Hello Edwina. Am 9.3.43 an den Folgen seiner Verwundung verstorben. ( Died of his wounds on 9. March 1943 ) Bernhard H. Holst
    13. Hello Alex and bolewts58. Thanks for bringing this up as I have never seen photos of the interior of this important memorial. It may be of interest that the memorial served as a German strong-point during the defense of Leipzig In April 1945. A photo comes to mind showing a dead German officer in front of the memorial. Perhaps taken by Robert Capa who was present in the area. Bernhard H. Holst
    14. Hello Alex. I am guessing here. The faces express mourning as do the figures underneath them. Attire seems middle ages or earlier. To me this points to some memorial. The iron cross insignias on the pedestal indicate a nationalistic influence. The shallow vessel could have been for an eternal flame. Bicycle at left and cartons piled up with some filing cabinets could indicate a storage area out of immediate danger through air raid damages. Bernhard H. Holst
    15. Hello Chris. Here is what I read : Ueber Ihren freundlichen Gruss habe ich mich sehr gefreut. ) ! Semper Talis Stets Ihr alter einstiger Btl.Komd. Franz von ?? Cannot read the last name, Bernhard H. Holst
    16. Hello Jock. Reading the lyrics now I believe the first two verses is what we sang. After those it becomes too serious..... Bernhard H. Holst
    17. Hello Garth. Not all pictured items are F.F.Legion related. I would consider the insignia of the Companie de Discipline a rare one ( disciplinary company, the one with the white sails ). Bernhard H. Holst
    18. Hello Douglas. This "document" is such a blatant fake it would be a waste of time to tick off the several points. A novice at work!! Bernhard H. Holst
    19. Hello Chris. For Post 78 my guess is von Xanten. A bell in my mind says a name much presented in the German Army of old and otherwise. Bernhard H. Holst
    20. Hello Hermann. First welcome to this forum. I believe this to be a mourning band ( Trauer Flor) worn by the Grossherzog. Probably a member of the family died and an official mourning period had been established or practice of that point in time stipulated the wearing of such a band for a certain time. Thanks for showing the picture. Bernhard H. ( Hermann ) Holst
    21. Chris: Thank you for showing this. It cannot be topped in my opinion. And all the small plates added over time commemorating events. Quite a piece. Bernhard H. Holst
    22. Hello. I agree with Andreas: "zufassen" is the word. Perhaps lending a hand could be applicable here: energetically lending a hand .... Bernhard H. Holst
    23. Hello Jock. Another nice find. For readers not too familiar with the German nightfighter history: Maj. Falck( later Oberst ) is considered essential in the formation of night fighter units and their deployment, tactics etc. The book's dedication is apparently written by a company commander of Luft Nachrichten Abteilung ( motorisiert) 61 or airforce signals battalion ( motorized) 61 which may have been attached to handle communications. Thanks for showing. Bernhard H. Holst
    24. hello Lambert. This document is an invitation to a "Zapfenstreich" ( impossible to translate but known as a tattoo) which is a typical German military ceremony involving mainly military music and which still take place today to honor prominent citizens who may not necessaryly be military personnel. Scheduled during the night because torches are featured to give it a festive/nocturnal aura. I am sure a Google search will bring some results. Bernhard H. Holst
