Thank you for the well written replies and additional militaria. You guys have some real gems. I can see them being destroyed as well. If I were I GI, I would automatically assume that they were SS.

I would expect there to be groups of these men in every city or village that had electrical or gas service. Any idea as to the force strength of these men? Why are their uniforms so rare??

Based upon what I can see here, these men were ranked in the non NCO enlisted rankings. The exact rank is unknown as their left sleeves are obscured. Anything written on the backs? -
