JimZ
Alexander L?hr (May 20, 1885?February 26, 1946) was an Austrian Air Force commander during the 1930s, and after the Anschluss a Luftwaffe commander during the Second World War. He was born in Turnu-Severin, Romania and executed by firing squad in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. He served as Platoon Commander of a Pioneer battalion in the 85th Infantry Regiment of the Austro-Hungarian army in World War I.By 1921 L?hr had reached the rank of Oberstleutnant. Between 1921 and 1934 he held many staff positions in the military, including Director of the Air Force in the Federal Armies Ministry. In 1934, he was made Commander of the small Austrian Air Force, a position which he held until the Anschluss in 1938.On March 15, 1938, he was transferred to the Luftwaffe where he became commander of the Luftwaffe in Austria. By then he had been promoted to Generalleutnant. He held many posts within the Luftwaffe including the leadership of the 12th Army between 2 July 1942 and July 11, 1942. He was its Commander-in-Chief through to December 1942. In 1943, he was Commander-in-Chief of South East (1 January to 23 August 1943) and at the same time Commander-in-Chief of Army Group E up to the end of the war.L?hr was imprisoned by the Yugoslavs from May 15, 1945 to 26 February 1946. He was found guilty of war crimes for the mass-murders of Yugoslav civilians and executed on 26 February 1946.Happy Easter Jim

Christian Zulus
Dear Jim,congratulations to your victory and to your promotion to rank #5 of the "good answerers" .You are moving up the ranks very fast .Many thanks for your difficult question #98 - beautiful lady, but I have no glue . Christian Zulus
OK, guess that makes him deserving of "special attention" in this thread? Dear Ed,our non-comrade in question had been a native Romanian, who fought at the wrong side of the front .But as the supreme commander of "Heeresgruppe E", he had been the counterpart of Tito's partisans and of the advancing Red Army. Here in Austria Alexander Loehr is a very controversial subject in history. Once the Austrian Army wanted to erect a small monument for him - as the former supreme commander of the Austrian Luftwaffe -, but the government said no, which had been a correct decision, because Loehr had been responsible - as the chief of "Heeresgruppe E" - for a hughe number of crimes at the Westbalkans.I assume, that Christophe's intention had not been, to focus that special quiz-thread only to "political correct" persons . We already hat questions about Beria ...As a Romanian, Loehr belongs to "Eastern Bloc" and I dared to put him into the quiz.Best regards & happy Easter Christian
Carol I
our non-comrade in question had been a native Romanian, who fought at the wrong side of the front .Christian, I doubt L?hr has been Romanian. On one hand his name is not typical Romanian. On the other, he chose and built a career in the Austrian Army which alone might suggest a German ancestry. The simple fact that he was born in Romania does not have any relevance, because following the same line of thought, King Milan Obrenović of Serbia had been a Romanian as he was born in Mărăşeşti. Hint: I died aged 39, only 7 days after my birthdayOkay, here's the answers to this one:Mariia Vasilievna Oktiabrskaia (before marriage - Garagulia).Born in the Crimea on March, 8th of 1905.She died in Smolensk on March 15, 1944.Guards Sr. Sergeant. She married a Soviet Army Officer, Ilia Oktiabrskii (they changed their names when they were married in 1925 to honor the October Revolution) who was later killed in the fighting in Kiev in 1941. She was not told till 1943. When she heard the news she was furious and wanted revenge. She sold all her possessions and offered to pay for a tank on the condition that she could be the driver. She requested this in a letter to Stalin and he granted her request. The tank was named Fighting Girlfriend which was painted on the tank. She was eventually wounded on January 17, 1944, when, against the orders of the tank commander she refused to remain in the safety of the tank when an anti-tank gunner damaged the tread and she jumped out to help in the repairs. A shell exploded nearby and she was hit in the head by a piece of shrapnel. She was evacuated to Smolensk where she remained in a coma for nearly two months when she died on March 15, 1944.She was named as a Hero of the Soviet Union on August 2, 1944.Dan

Dear Carol,of course, you are right .L?hr had been borne at the Serbian border in Drobeta Turnu Severin http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drobeta_Turnu_Severin . As far, as I remember, his father came from Germany and his mother from Romania . I think, that L?hr's father had been a shipper at the Danube .L?hr is regarded as an Austrian.Best regards Christian
