Nick Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 I see Ed's point in that anyone new may have to potentially trawl through 94 pages of quiz before participating. A lot of time and bandwidth. Maybe it is time to split this by year and start a new thread each year and see if it continues ?
Christian Zulus Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 (edited) For keeping the unity potentially trawl through 94 pages of quizDear Nick, that's THE point - no question. It's also nasty for me to trawl through the pages, if I am looking for some specific information .Christophe's quiz is not only entertaining, but extraordinary educative and contains tons of informations.Christophe has already installed a comprehensive index about all questions, which contains all the mentioned persons, medals, topics etc.You already installed a system, where it is possible to dial directly - without to trawl through the pages - the wanted page. For keeping the unity of Christophe's quiz-thread, the most "elegant" and "consumer friendly" solution might be, if Christophe might write the pages to the topics of his quiz-index - i.e.: Marshal Zhukov - p. 34, p. 74 & p. 89 or Red Banner of Labour - p. 12 & 58, etc., etc.Splitting up our quiz-thread would mean, that a GMIC-member, who is looking for informations about i.e. the Red Banner of Labour, would have to check two (2) threads .Keeping the thread + pages (maybe already linked ) at Christophe's very precise index .Just my few cents to the discussion ... Best regards ChristianBTW: Another "consumer friendly" solution might be, if Christophe's quiz is transfered into a genuine GMIC-section(like the Yugo Forum), the old questions are splitted up according to certain topics in different threads and every month, the content of the thread containing the recent questions, will be also transfered to the specific topics. Knarf Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 Hello Gentlemen, now my Question: (easy one because it was only half victory) The Kennedy family was given a dog by Nikita C. .This dog had to pass a security inspection as a possible spy dog. We need name of the dog and parents names. What was special about the parents. Bonus: Why are only female dogs used for space flights? Regards Frank
Christophe Posted October 19, 2007 Author Posted October 19, 2007 I see Ed's point in that anyone new may have to potentially trawl through 94 pages of quiz before participating. A lot of time and bandwidth. Maybe it is time to split this by year and start a new thread each year and see if it continues ?Nick,Thanks for your comments.I am not an IT expert (again), but I think we address a different issue than the one raised by Ed. But, maybe a yearly quiz could be a good option... Let's give us until year-end to see if this could be the solution. I'm not against it...Cheers.Ch.
Christophe Posted October 19, 2007 Author Posted October 19, 2007 (...)For keeping the unity of Christophe's quiz-thread, the most "elegant" and "consumer friendly" solution might be, if Christophe might write the pages to the topics of his quiz-index - i.e.: Marshal Zhukov - p. 34, p. 74 & p. 89 or Red Banner of Labour - p. 12 & 58, etc., etc.(...)Christian,Maybe... but I already thought about this. But, don't forget that each of us can parameter his screen in a different manner. Some, as most of us, -I think - will decide 20 post a page; some only 10, maybe some other options....that's why I deliberately chosed to refer to the number of the post... Ch.
Christophe Posted October 19, 2007 Author Posted October 19, 2007 Let's give us more time to think about the evolution of the Quiz... Maybe a yearly one...And, meanwhile, back to Frank's question: Hello Gentlemen, now my Question: (easy one because it was only half victory) The Kennedy family was given a dog by Nikita C. .This dog had to pass a security inspection as a possible spy dog. We need name of the dog and parents names. What was special about the parents. Bonus: Why are only female dogs used for space flights? Regards Frank
Christophe Posted October 19, 2007 Author Posted October 19, 2007 The name of the dog is Pouchinka (Пушинка, ? pelucheuse ?).The names of the parents are Strelka (female) and Pouchok (male). The parents were "special" because they participated in space related experiences : Strelka spent one day in space onboard Spoutnik 5, on 19 August 1960. Pouchok participated in ground experiences.Bonus : Females were more used because they were quiter, and the space "suits" were more suited to collect urines of females. They did not need to have legs up...Ch.
Hauptmann Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 Hello Gentlemen, now my Question: (easy one because it was only half victory) The Kennedy family was given a dog by Nikita C. .This dog had to pass a security inspection as a possible spy dog. We need name of the dog and parents names. What was special about the parents. Bonus: Why are only female dogs used for space flights? Regards FrankHi all,Okay, my second answer to a question so far:Korabl-Sputnik 2, popularly known as Sputnik-5, was finally launched at 0844:06 UT. There is a certain controversy as to the launch time. Sergei Voevodin gives the launch time as 0838:24 UT on Friday 19 August 1960 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome by a Vostok rocket into 297 x 324 kilometre orbit at 65.0 degrees inclination. It carried two dogs, Strelka and Belka, and other biological specimens including plants, rats and mice.On 20 August 1960 at approximately 1020 UT the retro-rocket fired 8000 km from the landing point. At approximately 1050 UT the ejector mechanism operated as a test for the Vostok ejector seat, and the container carrying Strelka and Belka continued descent under a parachute. The experiment container with the dogs landed at approximately 1102 UT - the spacecraft touched down nearby at about the same time.A card accompanied Sputnik 5, which carried the dogs Belka and Strelka into space in August 1960 on the Soviet Union's first successful capsule recovery mission. In case the capsule landed outside the recovery zone, the card and related instructions directed anyone finding it to contact local officials immediately. The finder was also asked not to open the capsule but to set it upright, and to leave it exactly where it had landed. (The image below can be found at the Space Race feature of the web site of the National Air & Space Museum, which is herewith acknowledged. The NASM web site also contains an acknowledgement: "Courtesy of Emmet, Toni, and Tessa Stephenson", the owners of this historical document) At a dinner during the summit between US president John F. Kennedy and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev in Vienna in June 1961, Khrushchev sat next to the president's wife Jaqueline Kennedy. He bragged about the flight of Soviet space dogs and told Mrs Kennedy about the puppies of the space dog Strelka. Out of lack of dinner topics and more as joke, she said to Khrushchev "couldn't you send me one?". She did not think more about it until two months later when Soviet ambassador Menshikov, during a visit to the White House, delivered one of the puppies to an astounded Mrs Kennedy.Info from: http://www.svengrahn.pp.se/histind/sputnik5/sputnik5.htmlBonus:Dogs were the preferred animal for the experiments because scientists felt that dogs were better suited to endure long periods of inactivity. As part of their training, they were confined in small boxes for 15-20 days at a time. Stray dogs, rather than animals accustomed to living in a house, were chosen because the scientists felt they would be able to tolerate the riguours and extreme stresses of space flight better than other dogs. Female dogs were used because of their temperament and because the suit for the dogs in order to collect urine and faeces was equipped with a special device, designed to work only with females.[1][2]Their training included standing still for long periods of time, wearing space suits, being placed in simulators that acted like a rocket during launch, riding in centrifuges that simulated the high acceleration of a rocket launch and being kept in progressively smaller cages to prepare them for the confines of the space capsules. Dogs that flew in orbit were fed a nutritious jelly-like protein. This was highly fibrous, and assisted the dogs to excrete during large amounts of vegetating time. More than 60% of dogs to enter space were reportedly suffering from constipation and gall bladder stones on arrival back to base.Info from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belka_and_StrelkaIf I win I'd like to pass the privilege of the next question to Charles (Hunyadi) who I believe wanted to ask one in relation to one of the other questions. Dan
Hauptmann Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 Hi all,Big oops! Looks like I was just a tad late... fooling with the pics took time. I also didn't say what made them special... figured that was covered under them being dogs that went into space.Sorry bout that. Dan

Right now I've just finished job #1, getting ready to head off on my bike to job #2, then back to finish up anything that comes in on job #1 in my absence and then I'm off on job #3 tonight so hoping I'll be back on by then. Will keep my fingers crossed.Good news is... I've finally got a new car (well used but new for me/us). I'll pop over more info in the lounge when I get home tonight.Catch ya'll in a bit! Dan

Hauptmann Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 Hi Dan,All good news!!!! Wish you all the best!!!!Cheers.Ch.Again many thanks my friend! I'll be sooooo happy to be driving again as it's been several months... in fact before I left for my Florida trip. But I got the special car I was wanting (not the Marlene... that's still a goal for later). And this one I'm going to customize... at least that's the plan. Will talk about that in my lounge entry. And still going to get Kim's fixed... hopefully in a few more weeks at most. Her's is far too special and unique to not be on the road again.Gotta fly for now. Everyone have a great one and we'll see you tonight! Dan
Hauptmann Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 Hi all,No decision yet? I'll keep hovering although I've gotta hit the bed in a bit. Long few days ahead. Dan
Christophe Posted October 20, 2007 Author Posted October 20, 2007 Hi Dan,I think you got the victory!!!! But, it is to Frank to officially declare the winner... But, in the meantime, just ask Hunyadi to prepare his next question, if you still wish to transfer the next one to him...Cheers.Ch.

I've PM'd Charles although he should be getting these post notifications as well. If he passes on it then I have someone else in mind. And although I'd love to do it myself, with having to go pick up my car (info posted in the lounge) this coming Sunday through Tuesday and having to work two of my jobs tomorrow I really don't have much time to dedicate to it right now. Perhaps if I win another down the road. Although it's unlikely in my case I'd sure love to shoot for one of those lovely awards for lots of answers. So we'll wait and see... back to hovering. Dan
Christophe Posted October 20, 2007 Author Posted October 20, 2007 (edited) OK, just waiting for Frank's feedback, now... Ch. Edited October 20, 2007 by Christophe

Knarf Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 Hello, Perfect answer it is your turn now. Back to work regards Frank Very difficult decision who the winner is. Christophe was faster, Dan did an exellent answer. Perhaps we should give Dan the opportunity to ask a question. Regards Frank

Perhaps we should give Dan the opportunity to ask a question. Regards FrankExactly what I proposed... And Dan wants to transfer it to Charles (see above).Ch.
Hauptmann Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 Thanks Frank and Christophe. Well, I give the honor of asking the next question to Charles. If he decides to decline then I'd like to pass it to Ed in honor of his recent birthday. So guess we'll have to wait to hear from Charles now. I've also PM'd him so hopefully he'll get with us soon. Thanks again! Dan
Ed_Haynes Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 Charles had had a good one ready already, and I'll love to see him pull that one back out of the box.
Christian Zulus Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 Dear Dan,congratulations to your great victory .Your answer hadn't been only correct, but also extremly informative & educative - a perfect job .Best regards ChristianBTW: We had already questions about (socialistic) dogs, maybe Charles might put a question about a (socialistic) cat . I love cats (and Lenin also loved cats ).
Christian Zulus Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 Maybe... but I already thought about this. But, don't forget that each of us can parameter his screen in a different manner. Dear Christophe, well, it's not so difficult to announce at the INDEX (and maybe at other places of the thread), that the dear members of GMIC should take the setting "20 pages", if they want to surf through the quiz-thread for getting their wanted informations - and there are already tons of highly valueable infos .Best regards Christian
