CRBeery Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 One of my old timers. I really like this bar and the history it represents. Do you think the 1866 clasp made any Prussians mad?
CRBeery Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 As we are talking Baden, does anyone else have the large Friedrich I with the engravers name on it? It is pretty small but as far as I can tell the ones on dealers pages and the one here are not marked. Don't tell Stogieman but I think I found a rival to the Saxon Silver St. Henry, at least for me .

Don't tell Stogieman but I think I found a rival to the Saxon Silver St. Henry, at least for me .Hi,There were essentially two versions of this medal. The first, awarded from 1869-1881 has the engraver?s mark (?C. Schnitzspahn F.?). The second, awarded from 1882-1908 is virtually the same but without the engraver?s mark. This is not an unheard of situation in that dies were known to wear out or break, necessitating the need for a replacement which invariably would produce minute differences. For instance, the Hannoverian Waterloo medal is another such case.It should also be mentioned that this Baden medal was awarded on one of two ribbons; the first being plain yellow and the second being that of the Military Karl Friedrich Merit Order.I hope that this clarifies the situation.Best wishes,Wild Card
CRBeery Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 (edited) It should also be mentioned that this Baden medal was awarded on one of two ribbons; the first being plain yellow and the second being that of the Military Karl Friedrich Merit Order.I am not sure that I read the information correctly but if I did this is one of 733 such awarded pieces for that time frame. Makes it even more special to me.Thanks for the info on the marking. I had hoped it was along those lines. Edited November 23, 2005 by CRBeery
Ulsterman Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 This is an unusual Baden document. But to my surprise the paper has watermarked leters in it. When did watermarks begin to be used?
Bob Hunter Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 ...and just to be a total post pig here's #1 as a ribbon bar...
Deruelle Posted November 24, 2005 Posted November 24, 2005 Hi everybody, have a look. A nice ribbon bar with iron cross 2nd class and Baden Zaehringen knight cross 2nd class with X. Simple but so nice.Christophe
Deruelle Posted November 24, 2005 Posted November 24, 2005 The same ribbon bar but without HHO3XChristophe
Wild Card Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 Gentlemen,I would like to ask a question with regard to post #64. Can anyone explain the significance of the laurel wreath on the Military Karl Friedrich Merit Order ribbon?I thank you in advance.Regards,Wild Card
Stogieman Posted November 25, 2005 Author Posted November 25, 2005 The wreath signified that it was actually the Order, not the Merit Medal on the KF War Ribbon.
Daniel Murphy Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 (edited) Now you have all got me started. Here is my only Baden medal bar, but it is a nice one.Dan Murphy Edited November 25, 2005 by Daniel Murphy

Daniel Murphy Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 And here are his decorations and awards listed. I think he did pretty good for a private.Dan Murphy
Ulsterman Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 No joking-Worth, Belfort, the bombardment of Strasburg and lots of provincial ops. I have never heard of before. Great piece of history.
