CRBeery Posted January 24, 2015 Posted January 24, 2015 Here is a bar that I have been offered. I have passed on it but I wanted to post it to make sure I have not missed something. The things that give me pause are the new ribbons, the use of smaller ribbons and the style of bar. I gues it could be a remount that was just kept very clean but I want to see what you think. I can still buy this bar. I have been out for a while so I am a little cold.
VtwinVince Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 That's a tough call without having it in hand. The combo is certainly possible, and the medals all look real. The backing is a little weird. Both the RAO and KO are early types, which is cool.
CRBeery Posted January 25, 2015 Author Posted January 25, 2015 (edited) Exactly my issue. The parts are there and seem to be good. In hand it is well put together. It just looks so new and the use of the 1/2 sized ribbons. If this were an older trapezoid mount with some age I would love it. Have there ever been a number of bars made from real parts on these type of ribbon? I don't remember any. Edited January 25, 2015 by CRBeery
Jock Auld Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 can you not buy it for the sum of the parts if you have doubts or would that not be your thing? If you do that then you can't be disappointed down the line?
Rogi Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 Have you black lighted it?Someone could have cleaned the ribbons, although it is a tough call, if it is a good price then I'd consider it, but if this a lot, or is a lot financially for you at this time, then you made a good choice at walking away, it is always tough to determine what to do in this situation. :)
CRBeery Posted January 25, 2015 Author Posted January 25, 2015 I have not black lighted it. The price is up there so nothing gained if a parts bar. Right now I'll keep my powder dry. If anyone knows this bar or the history of it I would like to know.
Beau Newman Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Just a comment - The 1870 bar combination is a bit unusual as the large units that were at Orleans were not at Weissenburg. It could be a staff officer or someone in a position that called for him to move around between units but, it is a bit of a red flag.
Rogi Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Seeing these bars always reminds me of Rick, he'd know what to do in a heart beat.
VtwinVince Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 I've seen a couple of bars which use the narrow gauge ribbon, and I've seen at least one with that type of backing.

Maybe I'm passing a good one but I'll be able to sleep!
Ulsterman Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Amazing theres' no Centennial medal with that 25 year oaks and those bars. But wow, I want it to be real.
ixhs Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 I think we need better pics of the medals and ribbons. I would like to have a look under the back wool. How much is the bar?
CRBeery Posted February 17, 2015 Author Posted February 17, 2015 I don't have this in my possession. It may go to SOS and I don't want to name the price as I'm not sure if I was given a better price than the public. It is close to what the parts are worth but that's too much for me to tie up right now. I'm still raising kids!

That doesn't bother me as there was a time gap between when the oaks were instituted and then the Centenary medal. If this guy was still alive when the Centenary medal was instituted he probably had to have a new bar constructed. I'd love to have this bar in my collection.
