MVK 3. Class with the 'war' ribbon

Gentlemen, This has confused me for some time and a search on the internet and in this forum has, so far, failed to provide me with a satisfactory answer.

For what reason(s) would a peace time MVK 3. be issued on the war ribbon?

    Hi Ian,

One reason could be that the original ribbon was damaged and a new, not the correct one, was  "married" to the order. I have seen with other countries Orders.

However since i am not very familiar with Austrian Orders, that is only speculation

The MVK was introduced in 1849 and it was instituted with the "war" ribbon even for peacetime and wartime service.

The war decoration was instituted in 1860 and the ribbon was still the same for both. There was never another ribbon for the imperial MVK.

    Hi Christian,

Just so I am 100% certain...the MVK was never issued on the plain red ribbon, but always on the 'war' ribbon.

    Regards,

    Ian

No, never. Always on this one, which is officially named "ribbon of Military Merit Cross" (in case of orders/ decorations awarded to officers)

Thanks. I had seen an MVK.3 on a red ribbon (eBay I think?), obviously wrong as I now understand.

There you are I felt the topic was started because of not a correct ribbon

Ian you can see those incorrect ribbons on eBay on Dealers sites and Auctions.  Some sellers will indicate, if they know, that the ribbon is incorrect

That is the purpose of those Forums - the share knowledge and experience

    Graf,

Spot on and that is what confused me as I had never seen photos anyone for the A-H army wearing the MVK 3. on the red ribbon. IndEed you are correct regarding this and other forums.
