    1. We often fob such things off as "Civvie wear" but I knew a DKiG winner who told me that when on leave the Military police used to control Wehrpasses of soldiers in Civilian clothes, and they would get into trouble for not wearing minis. I dont know if it was regulations, or just police whim...
    2. Hi, how big is it size wisw compared to the other bayonets? i have a WW1 combat knife that looks just like this (as far as I can see from the photos)
    3. Indeed... Great research! IMHO one of those moments that shows that Militaria in the hands of collectors is often better off than in the hands of the family who dont appretiate it!
    4. Pionier Bataillon (Mot.) 900 Badly wounded in North Africa, the EK was an almost automatic award with his Silver Wound Badge
    5. What exactly are these? Thanks Chris
    6. Very rare IMHO... I am sure many Volksturm had awards... but from their other capacities...
    7. Without knowing anything about such documents, that was my thought when I saw the stamp as well.
    8. Indeed... but I dont think there is a Delhi Scottish... and i remember how some of our members laughed seeing an Indian unit with bagpipes. There is a big difference between keeping traditions and having "the Ndebele Highlanders" Theoretically one could argue that African traditions are missing. SA Military tradition has Impi, Assegai and Ossewa... all would need a place, the All Blacks do a Haka, not a highland fling... and their rugby does not suffer because of it ;-) I am a great fan of South African Military history, but I think there is no realistic way to keep a Sotho Highland Regiment in Joburg and a Xhosa Highlanders in Cape Town, What % of the Other ranks in the Army are of European descent nowdays? Best Chris
    9. What is the highest decorated WW1 officer to have served in BW ? I guess no PLM....
    10. I agree... I remember once a friend had to sell some of his collection because of hard times... he said "you cannot eat an iron cross..." would have counted double back then... ;-)
    11. This on ebay... does anyone know what the award looked like?
    12. "A tragedy that they are being treated like this simply because the present Govt. is obviously nervous of having them under their old organisation." To be devils advocate .... it is a less a question of destroying traditions than it is of facing realities.... To fill the ranks of the "old" Transvaal Scottish you would probably need White Conscription again... anyone up for it? What are the dempgraphics of the modern SADF? It is probably realistic to say that the army adapts to the demographics of the country it belongs to.
    13. You will be happy to hear, I am old school... I still drink straight from the decanter!!
    14. I think that only counts when you were your mask in the shower!
    15. Just found this great old Trench Photo thread... Does anyone have anything new?
    16. I read with interest that South Africa is sending 400 Soldiers to the Central African Republic, I found this very interesting as I remember a time when foreign soldiers sent to RCA were always French... I guess this is really a shift in interests... Are the French less willing to supply troops in Africa, or dont they like the present Central African President?
    17. I love the 2nd Bavarian Inf Regt Medal! Do you have the record of the winner? if not, I can forward to it. Best Chris P,.S. can you post the regt medal here... http://gmic.co.uk/index.php/topic/56783-regimental-100-year-commemorative-medals-stuff/
