Wounded stripe
David S replied to Tony's topic in Great Britain: Militaria: Badges, Uniforms & Equipment
Yes Lower left forearm, vertically As to originality I have no idea -
I've seen bigger kilt pins Just plain odd to be found in war torn Germany What it looks like to me is two pieces made into one. The circular dingus with nothing in the center is a plain but nice bit of costume jewelry. Someone comes by with a spare Ontario coat of arms, gets it welded (messily) and now you have one where there once was two The differences between the quality make me think this

General Sir Charles Warren
David S replied to Alex K's topic in Great Britain: Orders, Gallantry, Campaign Medals
He was London Metropolitian Police Commissioner from 1886 to 88, it was on his watch that Jack the Ripper slew at will Born - 1840 / Died - 1927 Here's a short list of his awards (there are probably others) - The Most Distinguished Order of St Michael & St George - Knights Grand Cross (G.C.M.G.) The Most Honorable Order of the Bath - Knights Commander (K.C.B.) Order of St John of Jerusalem - Knight of Justice -in the pic on his medal bar- South Africa Medal Egypt Medal Khedives Star Metro Police Jubilee (1887) He served as a General (not a very good one) in the Boer War, so he probably received the following- Queens South Africa Medal Kings South Africa Medal Egyptian Order of Medijiye (sp?) - 3rd class (one of his collar awards) -
Coooool That gives him a battle star, most likely an invasion 'arrowhead' to go on his EAME You sure on the LCD designation? I don't find that type listed, the closest alphabetically is LSD (Landing Ship - Dock) which is a much larger vessel than a LCI (Landing Craft - Infantry) The third wave would have been no less ugly than the first two, in fact probably uglier due to the submerged vehicles (jeeps to DD tanks), burning landing craft, and accurate fire . . .

There tend to be more pictures with Army variations, than Navy ones This pic is a gem
-
The patch itself is a variation on the British Combined Arms insignia For the US Army Amphibious Engineers the background of the patch was blue For the Navy the background is red, the patch itself is for Landing Craft personnel Look here http://www.usslci.com/index.html

Coronation & Jubilee Medals
David S replied to a topic in Great Britain: Orders, Gallantry, Campaign Medals
Nice ones Darrell -
I may have been a little harsh in saying that this was 'an easy medal to earn', with competent service over a period of time it can be awarded, I was awarded six of these over 15 years, the only ones that meant anythings were the ones for valor Bingo This medal shows nothing like a V I have a number of problems with the story
-
If you want to spend the money . . . so be it The medal by itself is worth $10 tops It's not a hard medal to earn p.s. It's called the Army Commendation Medal, not Accomodation Medal . . .

Polizei Policeman with Wife
David S replied to nesredep's topic in Germany: Third Reich: Uniforms, Headwear, Insignia & Equipment
I knew I'd seen that patch before . . . but where? Of course !!! Uniforms, Organization & History of the German Police by J Angolia and HP Taylor From the book- At a ceremony held on 29 May 1934 at the main officer's training school in Berlin-Lichterfelde the traditional insignia of the polie troop of German East Africa was bestowed on the men of 1. Hundertschaft/LPG "General Goring." This was the "Southern Cross", worn as a cloth badge on the lower left sleeve. Hope it helps -
Thanks for posting this 54th Signal Bn was a subordinate unit of 1st Field Force (you can kinda see the shoulder patch) the 54th had responsibility for communications within 1st Field Force . . . here's the 1FFV insignia . . .color and subdued

G.I. Jane-- "Doughgirl" Just Doesn't SOUND Good
David S replied to a topic in United States of America
One cannot help but wonder why only the left side for insignia . . . No ribbons . . . only the overseas stripes Here's something interesting . . . same uniform (sort of) and hat, insignia on both collars http://www.e-anca.org/bios/Thompson.htm Further looking shows that the insignia is a caduceus with a ANC intwined . . . and this uniform is the second version http://history.amedd.army.mil/ANCWebsite/anchhome.html click on the lefthand menu for uniforms -
1950 A minimum of 24 years service A nice uniform indeed
