    1. I've seen that "version" before-it's the reverse of the front pressed into the back of the medal, which is very odd. I think Terry G. has one.
    2. well, I like both of them, although the stitching on the top one makes me want to look harder. Also, may we see the BMVK2x/crown up close? It appears a good'un though.
    3. In the 1886 Ranklist (p.395) I have him noted in Badische Train-Battalion Nr. 14: "Abg. Comm., Maj. Gockel als Ob. Lt. m. P. u.d. U.d. Drag. R.22 Absch. Bew.;"
    4. Offcr-Stlvtr. (Feld.-Lt) in a Saxon Landwehr regt? Unusual that there's a Prsn. KVK. Hints at occupation duties somewhere.
    5. Doh!!!! (sotto Homer Simpson). I should have known that one. My bad!
    6. Isn't he a Sergeant? Looks like he was in for a while too-that's the NCOs 6 year service medal and the Signum Memor. medal isn't it? Photo @ 1910?
    7. Nice! Thanks for the link. They look British made too. image posted for scholarly purposes only-less than 3% total content rule-
    8. Really?? Thanks Glenn. My Order of Battle has the 30th Div. as comprising the 28th snf 67th IR. So, the medals make sense for Gressenich.
    9. well, Gressenich was a Srgnt. in the IR 68 in 1870-71 and I can't even find where that regiment was in my order-of-battle. Rhode was unhelpfully in the Magdb. 4th F. A.Rgt. of the 8th ID, part of the IV army corps-with very different battle bars. A detachment of the regiment was with the special "festung artillery troops", so that may provide an explanation.....
    10. very, very cool. Is it possible to research the careers of all of these officers? I bet a lot of them had problems once the Communists took power.
    11. very cool. Thanks! Now let us see what regiment these men were in from the 1870 EK2. Perhaps that will determine the unusual bars.
    12. Heres' a superb CDV of an old Franco-Prussian war vet @ 1900 wearing (I think) a Beamter's uniform of some sort. His medal bar is a classic of a long-serving old vet who got a government job after his army time was up. EK2 (with oaks), Crown Order, Alg.Ehrzn. medal, Fr-Prussian campaign medal with (very clearly seen under magnification) battle bars for Amiens, Metz and St. Quenten (making me think 8th A.K.-but UNUSUAL with so few bars), Konigratz cross and a mystery medal (which may be a long service medal? and the 1897 Centennial. I was wondering if that mystery medal might be a China noncom, but frankly-I have no clue now. I would welcome any thoughts or comments- Ta-
    13. ah-cool! Do they perchance, have a members' badge/medal? I bet their magazine is good-(if they have one).
    14. One of Africas' best Generals these days is general Dambazu, Chief of Staff of the Nigerian armed forces. A man with a HUGE job and logistical and political difficulties beyond imagining, he seems to do well and a recent series of interviews he gave shows both his erudition-and more importantly, the reporters' respect for him. Here is his picture (from the Nigerian forces website, with permission of the local Consul-General). Does anyone know what he has on his very interesting ribbon bar? I note that it that newer thin-enameled style that one sees with the Irish army ribbons.
    15. huh1 What are his ribbons?I recognize the first two and the Olympic-but the last?

    17. whoa- a Landwehr LS with a BZL? Who got that-a landwehr company/battery commander?
    18. Lastly, these are the three (maybe 4) classes of bravery medals. interestingly-these were awarded to both Russian/Soviet and Cuban advisers in some quantity. They show up in obscure pictures from the 1970s. The dream of course, is one of these awarded to one of the GDR advisers. The GDR was heavily invested in Ethiopia and sent many army detachments there, some of which saw combat. I suspect the medals were made in the GDR given the boxes , but given the ribbon and hook suspensions, maybe Czechoslovakia as well.
    19. This recently popped up for sale on the internet-alas, I lost it to my French nemesis! Still, it shows an interesting tricolor pattern ribbon. It is the Derg version/commemoration of the victory medal. the original star (made by mappin and Web) is placed next to it for comparison.
