    1. By the way- I think your #21 is a mule-that is a 1950/1960s red cross/blood donation medal married to a wrong medal ribbon. The earlier blood donation medals seem to have paralleled the Soviet ones.

As an aside- I recently received an excellent book about the Ghanian army (it could use a bit of editing) that has the complete medals awarded since independence in the covers. It is quite good.
    3. hmmm... the top word is difficult and will require someone better at sutterlein than myself, but that word is : "??sorillou?"...with each "?" denoting a letter I don't recognize.....hmmmmmm.....
    4. Not 'Battalion" but maybe "kom" (at least i don't think so)-but I think it says 451 regt. The "something" kom.panie, regt 451? What's the doc?
    5. My understanding of the CMB is that only those with the designated MOS medic receive it-for action under fire. It is for designated medics only who have been in combat. see here: http://www.amervets.com/replacement/cmb.htm#isr
    6. If it wasn't for the extra medal I'd almost think this was the same guy-maybe a later picture?
    7. definetly Czech, inter-war period: 1930-35ish, I have a photo of these guys marching on remembrance day 1935 in Prague.
    8. I must say- i would kill for #2 and 4. I'll bet RR can fine #1 too-double awards tend to stick out.
    9. You know -it would be a great book to illustrate the flags and standards-and their histories.
    10. Bravo! Bravo! if only those medals could speak. Wasn't the Crimea one actually worn in India on campaign?
    11. Beautiful medals -great set. A bit out of my league though. perhaps if I win the lottery....
    12. there is a book of jewish participants in the great War -@ 148,000 names or so. i think Dave Danner has a link to it somewhere earlier. (Or my memory is faulty-only Jewish war dead?).
    13. wow! Interesting helmets (see thread below) Are the flags still in the museum?
    14. Maybe-I suspect the RSM rank was an Ethiopian rank, but the Emperor did have white bodyguards (no messy clan ties)-and hired a whole series of mercenaries to train his guerrillas after the Italians over ran Ethiopia in 1937. I've met enough people in my life who had a similar background to go hmmmm...trust but verify. But real people with odd backgrounds like this do exist.
    15. One of my all time favorite commemorative awards-put out in 1948 to commemorate the revolution(s) of 1848, it was allowed to be worn during the Communist era. I suspect it is a brilliant illustration of the tensions of 1948, when Hungary was being pushed towards Stalinism. The medal, beautifully made of bronze with enameled flags, (only @3,000 awards) was to perhaps remind Hungarians of their long commitment to democracy and their national identity at a time when slowly but surely, pluralism was being undermined by those who looked east.
    16. Rick and i saw a similar one the other day-only with a blue backing. Would that be customs?
    17. ...so, what ever happened to this treasure trove? I found this going through the old threads and was just wondering...
    18. I can not remember if I put this one up before or not, but just incase, here goes. I think this one is a badge of some sort of matronly "youth health guard", but I am using a very old dictionary.
