    1. Hmmmmmmm.....the Military Photos website (contemporary) has a GREAT thread about the Mexican armed forces with some incredible pics. Let me go have a look. The guy who posts there a lot is a Mexican army Major and he will know. I think they are contemporary...
    2. Spinks, Dix, Noonan, the militeria shop in the old passageway off Oxford St....ahhh...London is the Mecca for medal collecting
    3. ummm...isn't there a swords on ribbon bars table of comparison in Ricks' article? I already scanned and printed and mailed it to the bat-cave. The Saxon bars are sweet! I would LOVE to own bar #3!
    4. Fantastic!!! Congratulations! . I am curious as to the regiment- I am betting a Foot regiment of the line....I was talking to someone the other day about KGL medals that are still in family hands. The numbers we know of in circulation are very small compared to the total awards (and there weren't a lot of original awards to begin with). In many cases we figure there are fewer than 200 medals to a regiment for the entire war.
    5. You mean an original from 1800-1815? Try Wallis and Wallis. They are not cheap though.
    6. This is a fascinating ribbon bar. May I take a picture of it? The Olympic awards-well-we apparently have the award lists for the upper classes of the medal (not me-but the man in the batcave).....soo.......maybe........
    7. well....." A (twisted/warped) fool and his money are soon parted". Wow- I had no idea Herr Gottleib was now making money via auctions....this hobby really has some winners in it.
    8. Ummm. what size are they? Are they bullion? Any makers stamps inside?
    9. Yeah- I checked- but made by Bangor, Maines' best tailor in the 1940s. The ribbon bar really speaks to me- the USNR ls medal followed by the merchant marine campaign ribbons and lastly the Philipene liberation award (which I did not know the merchant marine qualified for). Merchant marine stuff is rarer than Hens' teeth and really hard one considering the casualty rates. I always thought it a Congressional insult they did not qualify for the WW2 Victory medal.
    10. I certainly hope so! I also hope that the army regulations booklets will surface. One must wonder what a tourist in Triploli might be able to procure these days.
    11. Really? I thought that this a membership medal (like the Kyfserbund or US VFW medal) . I had no idea that it was promulgated by the Korean government. I saw that the President of South Korea handed out a few to Korean war survivors in Ethiopia last summer-but the medal has been around for about a decade I reckon. I bought this group @ 2008.
    12. There is also a book of German pilots killed in WW1 with brief biographies-and of course numerous articles about various pilots. The beloved "Aviation Awards" series by the late, greatly respected N. O'Conner is a treasure trove of information. Also back issues of Cross and Cockade" have HUGE amounts of information in them. Have you seen the Aerodrome website (is that still around)?
    13. Very Cool. Odd that you'd be thought a "frgnnr" being from Toronto...
    14. Well-yeah. That's kind of what I was thinking. Odd huh? Yet there are some odd Beamter types out there where stuff like this happened-and their bars tend to look this clean and fresh because they got stuck away in drawers and not worn every day. Hmmmmm...time to call the Batcave in Massachusetts.
    15. ...so there were three brothers- all of whom were named Johann Heinrich.....von Schroeder? Yee Gods.
    16. well--you have logic on your side Jim, BUT there are dozens of photos and ribbon bars around showing that many old Ethiopian vets had BOTH the war medals. Have you seen the book on Resistor patriots by the way?
    17. I found this for $20 at my local flea market-check out the ribbon bar, which I reckon is @ 1945. This may be the coolest thing I have bought all year. Any ideas as to the rank?
    18. If it's real- I reckon that was a beamters' bar. I'd LOVE to paw this one.
    19. Well, I haven't read the other two but I like Duffy-he is an easy fun read.
    20. Now a classic- I first posted this one back in 1999 and now it turns up all over the internet-fame for an otherwise forgotten man. Note the corduroy jacket!
