This postcard was mailed (Feldpost) via Osthofen on 21.31.1914 In it one Feldwebel K. Scheuerwair of the 2nd Batt. Landsturm Fuss. Art. Batl.14 said basically, "Hi, things are great here-uh-how are you?" But note his medal bar, which Rick and I pondered over at length with magnifying glasses and illuminated jewelers' eyes and alarming the lady who sold it to me (and probably ensuring that anything I ever buy from her again will cost double or triple the amount). Baden Jubilee, Cntl, unknown medal and LS medal- Driving home the answer came to me...frack bar...very odd. But what is medal #3 (from the left)?

This is a tuna-fish can manufactured one. It's light and somewhat crude and screams Vichy made...maybe. Rick grabbed me and said:"look at this". We thought it might be worthy of discussion. The coast of Somalia? When was that campaign? The back is unusual too.

...and as of Friday-that is a very big YES! Apparently more French troops are being flown in tosecure a few base areas while the rebels and remaining government forces have at it.

The best introduction is the Featherstone series (paperbacks) entitled, "Victorian Colonial Wars". Often merely a reediting of the Illustrated London News accounts and aimed at British wargamers (lots of uniform details), they are very good, easy to read overviews. There are lots of additional volumes regarding almost every facet of imperialism, but I often refer back to these. Feathestone, whom I knew when a laddie, was a very decent, typically English Gentleman of the type often found of his generation: quiet, polite, patient, decent, modest, scholarly, unassuming, possessing multiple talents and intellectual curiosity and a dry wit. He never recovered from the murder of his young son, a police constable in the line of duty.

Hungary Awards to Railway Wokers in the HUPR
Ulsterman replied to Gordon Craig's topic in Central & Eastern European States
Nice-very nice. As a point of information-what do these sorts of badges go for over there? I see Hungarian stuff over here-but the venders almost always want between $20 and $30 for a piece. -
DDR ? The League of Useful Idiots
Ulsterman replied to a topic in Germany: Post 1945: Bundesrepublik & DDR
The most interesting thing about this item to me was the construction and the catch system. It mirrors-both in style, weight catch system and "feel", the early Ethiopian DERG council members' badges. -
Is there any chance at all we can make a number on his epalette? The portrait and the picture of his son I'd bet are 1880-90. The CDV is @ 1875 I reckon. The DRK portrait must be @ 1895. When did the DRK issue uniforms like that? We also know that between 1895-1905 (presumably a death date) he got his ZHLwith oaks....presumably for DRK work. We might be able to narrow down a list of possibles frown the rank lists.

Interesting stuff Ed. Have you ever seen any medal bars in wear? Or ribbon bars for that matter?

Hungary The Zalka M?t? medal
Ulsterman replied to Gordon Craig's topic in Central & Eastern European States
wow. A great medal. The pinnacle of the Hungarian socialist collection really. Where did you get it? The people who survived to get these must have had amazing stories to tell. -
Hungary Zalka M?t? Commemorative Medal 1956
Ulsterman replied to Ed_Haynes's topic in Central & Eastern European States
No-it was a one page article merely outlining the existence of the medal. In those days information was scant. The author was a diplomat in Hungary though and had 'original sources. It must be easy to find the 1959 newspaper article about the Spanish communists though. What was the Hungarian Communist Party newspaper called? -
Soviet Young 'Un
Ulsterman replied to slava1stclass's topic in USSR: Soviet Orders, Medals & Decorations
wow-all of what, 11? In Merridales' book she has a significant amount of information about these "children of the regiment", who also fought in the Red Army. Interestingly, HiWis as young as this were also awarded the German KVkx. -
Hungary Zalka M?t? Commemorative Medal 1956
Ulsterman replied to Ed_Haynes's topic in Central & Eastern European States
Some tid-bits gleaned from the JOMSA (April, 1976): (Paraphrasal)' the medal was awarded to Bela Kuns' operating groups both in combat AND for 'home front' activities. The plan for the medals' award was interrupted by the revolution of 1956 and first awards were made in 1957. More Soviet Russian citizens received the medal than Hungarians in 1957 AND in 1959 it was granted to 10 visiting Spanish communists. It was not awarded after 1959. Hungarians served in the International Brigade in the 21st battalion ("Matthias Rakosi battalion") formed in June 1937 and which fought at a strength of @1,000. Among the battalions' veterans were Laszlo Rajk (later the country's Foreign Minister) who was the Battalions' Commissar. He was shot for allegedly spying for Horthy in 1949, along with many other of the battalions' veterans. Other veterans included Erno Gero and the president Munic -
Great collection: should you ever feel the need to divest yourself... This little copper piece is a battle medal for the battle of yaytay-fought in the late summer of 1865. Missing its blue and white striped ribbon, it was awarded to Uruguayan troops that Fall and was worn on the battlefields in 1866-69. Uruguay's' contingent in the Triple Alliance was small but ferocious and even legendary, the Uruguayan legion being comprised of gauchos and other international condittori. By 1868, the Uruguayan legion had suffered almost 150% casualties (statistically) and was recruiting Paraguayan POWs to fill the ranks. By the end of the war, fewer than 100 Uruguayans were in the legions' battalion(s), which comprised @ 1000 soldiers.

What you get when you add this, to this, ?
Ulsterman replied to Kev in Deva's topic in Central & Eastern European States
cool! When were the 1939-45 crosses awarded? Are there other vets' awards? Do Romanian vets also wear the European war cross?
