    1. Some time ago I got a really rare bird. A collection that was started in the late 40-ties was up for auction. Tons of stuff you normally never see for sale. In one of the auctions a special medal was listed: "Stockholms-Tidningens medalj för svensk flygargärning" ("Stockholms-Tidningen" medal for Swedish flying deed). This is a rare one, awarded 39 times that I know of. To make it even more rare it was awarded to count Carl Gustaf von Rosen! Today the name von Rosen might not ring many bells. But he was well known in Sweden and made plenty of headlines around the world. Check out the short version on wiki: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Gustaf_von_Rosen Anyway, I placed a bid and figured it would be third or even forth best. Imagine my surprise when I won... Here are one pic of the medal and another with the award ceremony. The ceremony took place just before he and his Ethiopian pilots flew home with some Swedish planes Ethiopia bought. /Kim
    2. I don't have the exact number, but I think it's about 1 000 who served at the hospital Sweden sent. Less than that organized in the society and fewer that got a cross.
    3. A nice thread with lots of history. But no Swedish groups... So here is one of my newer addition to my korean war collection: a Old Comrades Alliance of the Swedish Ambulance Cross of Rememberence and Merit. It was first awarded in 1954 and is pretty hard to find. This is one of two I have seen since collecting medals for some odd twenty years. Not exactly a group but it comes together with the member pin of the society. Probably recycled as the cross center. /Kim
    4. There is a new book out on Norwegian decorations: Norske Dekorasjoner; Harald Hallberg; ISBN 978-82-93193-17-3. The ONLY book on all norwegian decorations. Text in norwegian but short summary in english. Your medal Owain is Olav V:s Erindringsmedalje, awarded 1957-91. Produced at the royal mint. The gold (silver gilt) was awarded about 900 people and the silver medal 1300. It's a typical royal medal for palace staff and deserving foreígners. /Kim
    5. It could be Paul. I did a quick look in the old digitalized Swedish newspapers omline. Nothing came up. If I had looked for the life saving medal there would be plenty. The royal family is French and I know Oscar II did visit France at least once a year. However, when he got the medal in question I don't know. Sadly medals and decorations are a very poorly reserched subject here. /Kim
    6. Yes, that's the story of one of his French medals. But it's for the lifesaving medal not the medaille militaire. The lifesaving medal was a big deal for him and he wore it as much he could. I doubt the story of the medaille militaire is as exiting, perhaps just a friendly gift in a military context. /Kim
    7. Perhaps not that unkown, as he wrote his name on the photo: Yngve Schröder 1934. I don't have any records that can confirm if he was a military attaché. But I see that he had a knights cross of Polonia Restituta in 1937, then he was a captain not a lieutenant as in the pic. He is wearing a uniform for the "Kungl. Norrlands Artilleriregemente" royal artillery regiment of Norrland. /Kim
    8. So I was 50% correct Strange that it's always these Swedish masonic "bling-bling" that comes up on internet forums. /Kim
    9. I think it's Swedish. But I can't remember what it is. Church or masonic award from the island of Gotland.
    10. My guess would be an early medal from "Idrottsföreningen Kamraterna", abrv.: IFK. I saw it translated as Sporting Society Comrades, but I think the litteral translation of kamraterna to comrades gives it too much of an eastern block feelling. A better one would be pals/buddies or sometihng like that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idrottsf%C3%B6reningen_Kamraterna /Kim
    11. I'm not sure who Sara Fim is... Mubarak got the Royal Order of the Seraphim when the king made a state visit to Egypt. /Kim
    12. Very nice! It's not often that Gold stars show up today. Podvignarod lists him for a bravery medal and OGPW 1class also. Strangly not on the warheroes.ru site but not all heroes are.. Thanks for sharing! /Kim
    13. Well it's not a non-ebay site as it's owned by eBay but still has its old name. 750USD could be a find but for me... yet another collecting field.... no reference books.... no additions in the near future. Also it's free for anybody to bid. So next time PM me and I'll help out with the Swedish registration. /Kim
    14. No, far from it. I placed a bid on it but then a bidding war broke out. It ended at approx. 750USD. That was way over what I want to give for it. /Kim
    15. Thank you for your input gentlemen. I appreciate it. Now to deside if I should expand collecting to yet an other hole to put my money in.... /Kim
    16. Hi This recently came up on a Swedish auction site. The auction isn't over yet (three days left). The seller has a lot of other stuff that isn't properly named but this caught my attention. If I'm not mistaken this is a order of the Golden Grain. But the big question is - is it a nice copy or real? Anyone want the link just PM me. No, I'm not the seller. /Kim
    17. As Christer is using the Statskalender for his project I belive I can answer some of your questions. Christer lists Germans. But any other nationality could of course be listed IF they got an order before 1940. After this year the Statskalender only list orders to Swedes. I don't have any reference to books with the info you're looking for Herman. Much of that are only in archives. If you want info on a single person you could try the Royal court, they have all the records there. /Kim
    18. It was most likely a order of the Northern (or Pole) Star. Northern Star orders were by far the most common to foreigners, but the box was the same for the others so who can tell for sure... /Kim
    19. This guy: http://www.warheroes.ru/hero/hero.asp?Hero_id=7555 /Kim
    20. I might as well list the germans in the 1902: Wilhelm Ambach "överbåtsman" German navy awarded 1895 Heinrich Friedrich Christian Jonas Preussian "sergeant" aw. 1899 Frantz Matern "Fyrmästare" German navy aw. 1895 Friedrich Wöhlbier "Musikdirektör" aw. 1895 /Kim
    21. An NCO would never have gotten an order, by definition an officer's decoration. As Christer say it's more likley he would get the "Svärdstecknet" Royal Sign of the Sword, which was a NCO decoration. The "Statskalender" used to list those as well but stopped at some time between 1902 and 1919 (not sure what year they stoped). Foreigners were awarded this but very few got it, 1881 calender lists three recipients and 1902 - ten recipients, including some from 1881. /Kim
    22. No problem Christer. Just remember that the "Statskalender" isn't a definte list of recipients. It's a list of those who were alive when the book was printed. /Kim
