Thanks guys for all your diligence. Dave, the guy you've found is definitely him, as the dates and locations fit. I guess he never made Oberst. Anyway, he was killed in January, 1945 while driving in a car, by Russian fighter-bombers.

I would guess a junior officer from Weimar, as this principality did not give out the White Falcon often to 'foreigners'. I would speculate that your guy probably also got a Wilhelm-Ernst Kriegskreuz.

I can see why you grabbed it, pretty neat combo, but probably not identifiable. I'm still looking for a straight EK\White Falcon schnalle to complete a group.

Nice looking Schnalle to a retread highly decorated junior officer from WW1. Always nice to see the White Falcon on a bar.

It appears to be silver gilt? I would say it's a later WW1 award piece. Too bad about the damage.

Correct, that is a scarce one, and it appears to be an award piece with the Stempelschneider's name.

You do see entries in Soldbuecher where this decoration is described as the Golden Military Merit Cross, but all you have to do is look at the Urkunde for the proper designation. Sorry to be such a pedant.
