Tom is right, and there are numerous variations in the jeweler pieces, and a subculture of collectors who like them.

I believe the EK1 case is an early WW1 example. Ones from 1870 are extremely rare. You have a case for the Friedrich Order, which looks to be a real gold award piece. The MVO is marked for Weiss & Co. A very interesting grouping. The mini medal bar is also great.

Very interesting group of items, the Gallipoli Star is a real gem, not often seen with a genuine case. What markings are on the BMVO4mK?

Not a ommon medal, and hard to find mounted. I have a cased example on a bow, and one on a bar.

Looks like a 1957 version by Steinhauer & Lueck. These are sought after as they are not that common.

LOL John, I've been on crutches quite a bit lately due to an accident, so no joking about such things. On a lighter note, I'm looking forward to your project regarding our friend Buttlar. My dad was impressed that he was a Pour le Merite winner, since he grew up in East Prussia, where such orders were held in high regard.

I can't help with the list, John, but anecdotally, my dad lived in the same building as a refugee after the war with this guy, and he was a pretty interesting guy according to the old man.

Dear forumites, I know virtually nothing about these, but I'm guessing this is a 3rd class? It shows some wear to the enamel on both sides from being worn. Any details you can provide such as approximate age would be greatly appreciated.

Hi egorka, Thanks for those images, very useful. So if I understand you, only one font was used for these pieces? Do you think the other two medals are also fakes? It seems amazing that someone would go to the trouble of producing such fakes and then getting obvious details such as the font wrong.

Thanks for your input. In all honesty I find these Russian medals a complete minefield. I have seen worse looking items deemed original, and vice versa. I have had a good look at these, and they are die struck and show a lot of wear. I know the quality is atrocious, but this is nothing new for this material, as far as I can tell.

Gentlemen, I am not a collector of this material, so you're going to have to explain to me why this is no good. Are all the medals fakes? What makes them fakes? Who is producing this material? Laconic comments such as 'too bad' are completely meaningless.
