A Diplomatic Question
hucks216 replied to Gordon Craig's topic in Germany: Third Reich: Research, Documentation & Photographs
Can't say that I know of where to look but would the German Embassy be able to help with a list? Not sure where such a request would lay with regards to the German data privacy laws but it isn't as if you are asking for addresses of family etc. This book might be helpful. It seems to have a list of 400 Nazi party members in the UK pre-war so would include diplomats I would assume: http://www.sussex-academic.com/sa/titles/history/barnes.htm -
Unfortunately, without looking in to the records it won't be possible to determine what unit he belonged to. At one time or another there would of been a few Pionier related units based on Guernsey. Some examples being: 4./Festung-Bau-Btl 157 Stab & 1./Bau.Pi.Btl 158 3./Brücken-Bau-Btl 521 Eisenbahn-Bau-Btl 511 2./Festung-Bau-Btl 152

Johann Buckreus died on the 4th February 1942 and is buried on Guernsey at Fort George cemetery in St. Peter Port in Grave 68. He was born on 4th October 1906 in Haag am Hausrueck and held the rank of Oberpionier when he died. (Source: Volksbund) There is a photo of his grave headstone available from this site: Buckreus Grave

I don't think there are any files at NARA for non-Officers (except possibly SS) and in terms of awards the DKiG holders don't seem to get anywhere near the same exposure as RKT. NARA has pension files for RKT but as far as I know it doesn't have details for DKiG winners. Even in specific unit history books it is not uncommon for the winners of the DKiG to get no mention at all - over 24,000 were awarded so it isn't surprising considering how relatively common it is. Your best hope would be to contact Deutsche Dienstelle and request a copy of his service details and hope that the person at DD who receives the request is one of those who doesn't stick to the letter of the law. However, considering that there are 75 'Wilhelm Grimm' listed as being killed in Volksbund you will need his date, and possibly place, of birth to stand any chance of them locating him in their files.

A friend has asked me to try and identify this signature for him and I am currently stuck on it, I can not even identify the first letter. Is it an A, F or something else? It is signed on behalf of GdA Wiktorin and there is a chance it could be a Luftwaffe Generalleutnant and I am basing that solely on not being able to find a Heer name in my books and files that might fit. So could be Heer but could be Luftwaffe.

Naval Records
hucks216 replied to Jordan@85's topic in Great Britain: Research, Documentation & History
For pre-1928 RN service records you can search, buy & download them here for a couple of quid: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/royal-navy-ratings-service-records-1853-1928/ Other options for later records are listed here: http://www.royalnavyresearcharchive.org.uk/Records_page.htm -

Hadn't thought of that. Could be a possibility. -
Kriegsmarine Narvik
hucks216 replied to nesredep's topic in Germany: Third Reich: Wehrmacht Medals, Decorations & Awards
A Narvik related Soldbuch is this one to a sailor who served on one of the destroyers and was wounded during the battle. Unfortunately as the Kriegsmarine didn't start issuing SB until June 1941, and by then this sailor was serving on Z-23, it isn't possible to identify what destroyer he was on during the battle. As far as I can find out there are no casualty lists for the ships involved that actually name those wounded. It comes with a colourised image with the cap band having an emblem on it but I haven't been able to identify it to see if it helps narrow down the possibilities. -

Moonrakers at work
hucks216 replied to Odulf's topic in Germany: Third Reich: Research, Documentation & Photographs
It could certainly bear some weight. I am assuming it was a prop for some sort of play?
