Gordon Williamson Posted September 9, 2005 Posted September 9, 2005 Every now and again, a little something comes along that reminds me why second rate firms like Junker could never hope to equal the quality of Steinhauer at their best.

And what a nice cross that is! Beautifull!Dietrich
Ronny Posted September 9, 2005 Posted September 9, 2005 (edited) I am speechless Thanks for sharing.Cheers,Ronny Edited September 9, 2005 by Ronny
Bob Hunter Posted September 9, 2005 Posted September 9, 2005 Absolutely stunning! Juncker like Rolex was the 800 pound gorilla of marketing for its day. It didn't mean they were the best jeweller nor does it mean that Rolex is the best Swiss watch.
Scott Posted September 10, 2005 Posted September 10, 2005 (edited) Stunning cross. I have to agree, S&L does make a nice product! Edited September 10, 2005 by Scott
Luftwaffe Rules Posted September 10, 2005 Posted September 10, 2005 Oh man those are beautiful! Im drooling...simply outstanding! ROCK ON Jon
joe campbell Posted September 10, 2005 Posted September 10, 2005 gordon-beautiful!i have seen - and have - a copy of the BH Mayer"russian horde", which i think is reminiscent ofthis one.do you have any thoughts as to it's relative quality,or, for that matter, validity?this condition, when found, is certainly an asset toany collection.joe

Here is mine in a direct comparison shot with the S&L (S&L on the left). For me its the "minty" condition of the "Russian" Mayer pieces which make them special. In aesthetic terms, I think the S&L has the advantage, a much more graceful curvature to the arms. For me, S&L are definitely the finest EKs, with W?chtler & Lange a close second.
Biro Posted September 10, 2005 Posted September 10, 2005 Really stunning pieces Gordon - both of them!!Additional credit is due for not once using the term... 'minty' ....to describe either piece!!!! Congratulations on both counts.Marshall
Glenn R Posted September 11, 2005 Posted September 11, 2005 I love the trapezoidal swastika on S&L's and the overall feeling of quality about them. They also made a superb EK2 with the same feeling of quality. I've never been able to really grasp the Juncker fixation when comparisons can be made to other manufacturers. Kleina nd Quenzer being another particular favourite of mine. I also have a good example of the "Russian horde". It is quite difficult to explain how different these crosses feel in terms of being unaged. Quite stunning really.
joe campbell Posted September 11, 2005 Posted September 11, 2005 side by side, i'd have to agree.the S&L is the more delicate.glenn- i, too, am partial to the K&Q's!all of these photos are terrific.thanks, joe
Jim Baker Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 Gordon,That is a beautiful EK! S&L's are also my favorite, followed by nice Zimmermans (if you can find them). This one is exceptional.
Billy G Posted September 13, 2005 Posted September 13, 2005 Gordon,Beautiful pieces indeed. I have a "26" of the Russian horde and have always thought it the most beautiful thing, probably because it was my first EK but I see your point about the curvature of the S&L. I have an EK II by S&L but I figured comparing it to the "26" would be like apples and oranges.
