avadski Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 This is the only original photo from WW1 that I have. I think here we can see the reason why the EK2 is so common in the marketplace in these days. If you look closely you would see at least 16 guys out of 45 wearing the EK2. Who knows how many of those in the 2nd row wear EK2 as well.
Chris Boonzaier Posted March 9, 2010 Author Posted March 9, 2010 Hi, if the photo was from 1917-18 they probably had quite some time to win them.... ;-)
avadski Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 The aircraft behind (DFW C.V) was introduced in 1916. So I'd say yes, photo could have been taken in 1917-18 ;)
Tom Y Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 1917- For a bandsman his face looks like he's done a lot more than marching up and down the square. I like the contrast in expressions of these two.
Chris Boonzaier Posted March 12, 2010 Author Posted March 12, 2010 You can question his taste in haircuts,,, you can question his taste in upper lip decorations... but he is proud of his medal!
avadski Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 :D lol I wonder what is other award was...there seem to be one more hanging under the EK.
Chris Boonzaier Posted March 12, 2010 Author Posted March 12, 2010 lol I wonder what is other award was...there seem to be one more hanging under the EK. Hi, Probably Saxon as the photo was taken in Dresden best Chris
VtwinVince Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 Great thread. You can't under-emphasize the value of this decoration, especially early in the conflict. My grandfather won his in November, 1914 with the 203 R.I.R at Dixmude, apparently one of the first enlisted men in the regiment to get it. He was badly wounded and unfit for further duty, but most photos of him after this point show him wearing his EK2.
TerryG Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 Handing them out: Ulsterman, a wonderful photo! I am envious!
Naxos Posted March 13, 2010 Posted March 13, 2010 (edited) He was so excited he put his belt on backwards The Baden Guards ain't the Prussians Edited March 13, 2010 by Naxos
Tom Y Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 This is cheating a bit, but I'm so chuffed I just had to post them. In today from Heiko and the other kind
Tony Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 These photos don't show a person but show how highly held/patriotic the Iron Cross was, so I hope no one minds me adding two inanimate objects to this thread. A small tin containing jam (still). Tony
Tony Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 A silver spoon. On the front the EK with Mich Gebar das Eiserne Jahr 1915 with the date 26 July on the back. Born in July 1914 and christened in 1915 maybe? Tony
Tom Y Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 I just came across these amid the chaos of my collection. As they're I assume they belong that way.
murat2010 Posted April 18, 2010 Posted April 18, 2010 No BS that photo has brought a tear to my eye. Great work! Here is a very interesting one of a soldier visiting his brothers grave... putting on his EK2 for the occasion..
Chris Boonzaier Posted September 17, 2010 Author Posted September 17, 2010 That one is a fantastic study! Reminds me of a German memoir when a soldier is miffed because the Kaiser came by where 2 sections were resting after a fight.... One section had suffered badly but accomplished little due to an incompetent Lt. One had fought well, suffered few casualties due to a skilled Lt. The kaiser gave out crosses to the first unit as they looked more like troops ho had been fighting... Below, you seldom see Navy pics...
Chris Boonzaier Posted September 23, 2010 Author Posted September 23, 2010 I have a weakness for other ranks with the EK1 pic (Yup, I know its an EK2 thread!!) His name is Hinrich Büsing... no idea of the unit. Wish I knew what the 2nd ribbon was.... in a group photo they all have this 2 ribbon combination... maybe Hessen?
