Money? As I have been known to comment before playing certain games of skill and chance: "Oh, can you play this for money?"

And BTW ... I told you guys that a couple of my questions were going to be a little, um, obscure. But no, you just had to have them here, so don't blame me now. Is there an evil cackling icon?

I got home last night and no sooner did I sit down in the living room than I passed out from exhaution. That trip is a killer. I really do love my friends in Georgia and I love what we're doing together for the orphans, but after each trip I am tempted to say "No more."

I brought a ton of things with me to share here as well to sell later on. Unfortunately, my bags took another route. United assures me that they will catch up to me today, but I always worry. It happens maybe a third of the time these days. I had my best collectibles in my carry-on, so they made it home with me. Naturally, that will catch an inspection at every scanner along the way and cause some delays. No problems, though. Well, except for losing the check-in bags. I have a fairly large box of "lesser" (but still nice) collectibles and all my photos and documents in one of those bags. I can always replace the clothes and toiletries, but not the collectibles. Especially the photos and docs.

Those photos include two propaganda photos (the originally distributed photos, straight from state archives) that will be a natural for this thread, should the day ever come when it's my turn again. I will be sorely disappointed if it takes more than an hour to ID the individual. No, not a rock star or martyr or funny-looking watch. This person is actually in our books. 'Nuff said, and I'm determined to win again one of these days.

Good to be back and I'm looking forward to even more participation here at GMIC. The move of this thread to this forum surprised me a little, as I really only frequent two forums now, and occasionally The Lounge. Probably the additional exposure is good for me.

Say, who's good with WW I Polish regimental badges here? I picked a nice one up along with a few other things from one guy in Tbilisi and I know absolutely nothing about them. At least, I think that's what it is. A silver eagle on a red-and-white stylized cross with the number 1915 at the bottom. Naturally, I'll post it here eventually, but I thought someone might know it just by a simple description.

I'll try to start posting a few of my new things today and later this week. Some of you have kept in touch and asked me about them I think you will enjoy and learn from some of them. I know that I have. Otherwise, I guess, what's the point?

So what's been going on with you guys?

    Chuck

    Hi Gerd,

This is the Russian conductor Valery Gergiev.

In 2005, he has been awarded the title of Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion.

Valery Gergiev is a director of the St.-Petersburg Mariinsky Theatre, whose name is also associated with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Metropolitan Opera and the London Symphony Orchestra.

    Is this correct ?

    Cheers.

    You guys are good.

But ... does he know Alla Pugachova? If not, how good can he be? I mean, really? I brought back two of her concert DVDs and a friend is looking for more in Moscow.

I also brought back the DVD set of the recent TV production of Master & Margarita. We're reading it in my Russian class and I guess we're going to watch parts of it. Well, I'm going to, at any rate.

    Life is good.

    My turn ,now...

    An easy one :P :

The Karl Marx Order of the DDR (East Germany) has been instituted on May 5, 1953 on the occasion of Karl Marx's 135th birthday. On the recommendation of the Minister Council, it was awarded to individuals, enterprises, organizations, and armed force groups for "exceptional merit" in relation to ideology, culture, economy...

    My questions :

    1. Who has been awarded the Karl Marx Order number 1 ?

(The SN is visible on the Ausweis related to this Order).

    2. When has been awarded this Order SN 1 ?

    3. Where are today located this Order and the corresponding "Ausweis" and "Urkunde" (docs) ?

    Good luck!!!

    Here we go.

I have made the 1st and 2nd World War. I've been in the Red Army at the very beginning and participated at the civil war. Between the 2 World Wars I travelled a lot and participated to the Spanish civil war. During the 2nd World War, I was a local hero in my country. I was awarded many awards in my life, including some very high awards from the Soviet Union. I believe I have received awards from 59 different foreign countries or so. I also gived myself very nice awards. I really liked to show them to my friends on special occasions. Who I am?

    ------------------------------------

I don't know if it is too easy or if I haven't give enough details! :o

    My guess: Josip Broz Tito.

And we have a winner! ;)

Here is the list of awards that Tito owned : http://www.titoville.com/odlikovanja.html

It is said that Tito had 16 children with 15 differents woman. I guess he was a busy partisan. :jumping:

P.S.: By the way, Beria was from Georgia, so it couldn't have been him.

By the way, what is the top right medal on the picture?

Aw, doggone it. I thought of Tito, then dismissed it because I knew that he wasn't in the Russian Army in WW I. Of course, you never said that he was. Will I never learn to read the directions?

    Congratulations, kimj!!!

BTW, in what way did Tito participate in the Spanish Civil War? That is something that I was not aware of.

Yes! I got it! :jumping: Oh no, now I have to come up with a question... No, just kidding. I will give it some thought and get back later today or tomorrow.

Chuck, in the Spanish civil war Tito was responsible in recruiting volonteers from Yugoslavia. I also heard that he never actually was in Spain. But there is also some rumour that he was involved in a murder of a Yugoslavian anarcist/communist in Barcelona. So if he never was in Spain he could not have been involved...

    Very nice pic Bryan!

Now what to ask... Not too easy and not too hard.

    /Kim
