Very,very cool. This is why this is such a great hobby. A small piece of tangibility- a physical artifact, can encompass an interesting aspect person's life and illuminate history. I would have LOVED to have spoken to this woman about socialist realism and art. I'll bet she had some great stories to tell: artists always do, but one who prospered under the Communist regime and lived through Horthy, the occupation and 1956 must've had a very full life indeed. Congratulations on finding such a great piece. I envy you. Any chance anyone at the National Gallery might still know of her? Maybe she'd be a good article?

For those on the forum (e.g. Rick) who do not (yet) possess a Hungarian-English dictionary, would you be so kind as to translate her awards? I've never seen that adjectival tense at the end of "work" before. Is it diminutive? Feminine?

Have you seen Heikos' bars here? I'd look there first. They are top notch and many have traceable linages. Also, any of Claudios' cast offs are unusually mouth watering. Why waste your money on something you'll regret later?

You think he wasn't an officer in 1940-IF he was recalled (not no LS medals)? One might have supposed that THIS tidbit in the button hole merited mounting, but still not by 1940, when this snapshot was taken. I have other photos ( 1935-39) to back up my statement.

Ideally yes-but not always. There was a fashion statement of "wearing the highest decoration in the button hole".

Looks real and very nice-I'd wager navy with an ek2 in the button hole. I think RR has the numbers for the Finnish medal-and there weren't many awarded.

I also wondered about the ambiguity in the above remarks, but was appalled at the loss of the swords. Bottom line is, you almost NEVER know for certain. There are exceptions to the rule and sometimes photos show up to demonstrate these exceptions. A year ago Rick had a post about an odd medal bar that showed up in a Wehrmacht General's photos from @ 1942, thereby proving the odd combination existed. Even today vets do odd things-Chris B.'s home-made, but hard earned (See "the heretic" thread) French bar will baffle collectors in 100 years (unless he engraves it, which I personally will PAY him to do) and God alone knows what people will think of my bar, filled with pretentious baubles and other odd things. Last year there was photo of an Austrian band master taken in 1942 that gob-smacked me-a full chest of WW1 and TR awards-and no HK. If I'd seen that I'd have laughed at a medal show, but there it was, complete with odd Rumanian and Bulgarian orders at the end too.

On the return journey, the Royal Train was about to steam out of Marianbad station, when the superintendent rushed up to the Kings' carriage and saluted violently, whereupon the train was stopped, the official was summoned to his Majesty's presence and duly decorated (so as to get the train moving again). At the conclusion of the party, Lord Beresford, who was in the party, turned to the King inquiring: "What did that fellow want?" Oh, a decoration, a ribbon". "What did you give him?" "I gave him the Royal Victorian order." "Serves him jolly well right!" In a very early horse and Hound magazine there's a recollection of a racing and grouse shooting party at Newmarket @ 1906 where King Edward bestowed "almost a score" ( 20) RVOs on various attending servants.
