    1. yup-dead on Prof Ed. There are two major books out there on Ethiopian orders and a few collectors. the mistakes in one of the books are easily corrected. Also, the exiled Royal House, nowadays busy selling knighthoods to pay for their womens' college and supporting disabled kids in Addis have their own web site: the imperial Ethiopian Crown Council. By the way-if you want to sell that, I would trade/buy it.
    2. I am really coming to appreciate these tunics. Was only one parade badge allowed? Nice medal bar too.
    3. Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Oh well. They are still sold/handed out at some monestarys in Israel. I have friends on the Ashkalon digs who were 'awarded" them; I was very jealous. In the old days, when travel was tougher, this may have actually meant something more.
    4. I am! Many thanks. I owe you a beer or two. Now to subscribe. Back issues available? My paltry contribution. Note the good sister pinned one of her collar badges on the medal:
    5. Just as an aside-there seems to be some photographic evidence and medal bars out there that clearly show that the Red Cross awards made during the war were treated as war decorations-and thus, moved towards the front of the bar, ahead of peacetime merit and campaign/membership awards. I am wondering if the Wilhelminian Jerusalem Cross there , if it is incorrect, (isn't there a roll of these out there?) may have replaced or been used instead of the Vatican's Jerusalem cross , which seems to have been awarded to Catholic pilgrims and those who gave some sort of service to the Holy See in the Trans-Jordan area.
    6. I accidentally stumbled across the on-line issue of a German medals magazine on Tuesday and stupidly did not earmark the site. however, on it was a complete roll (49 pages) for the Franco-Prussian wars' EK for Junngfrau etc.. from 2006. Does anyone know where this is/was? Further google searches have resulted in nothing.
    7. I would actually. His Granddad was actually and ancestor of mine (illegitimate though).
    8. It could also be that the red cross medal as awarded before the war-or indeed, during the war. There are documented cases of people in Feldlazaretts receiving the red cross medals as well as other medals (like the EK2).
    9. ...Is that a "battle " medal? Was it awarded only to officers (like the Culloden medal) as a 'souviner' or was it quasi-official (e.g. state mint produced/awarded)? It's wonderful.
    10. and another...look at that eagle's stitiching:
    11. ...true, true ... but they are fools. Anyone who spent 10 minutes on-line would realize that there is a thriving and indeed, rich antiques and higher art community craving these historical tidbits.... and willing to pay top dollar to obtain them. as an aside, art imitate life: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MAYrF1PDks
    12. Yes I do-wasn't he wearing a Mayor's chain of office? I actually have a photo of a chap uniformed very similar to this example (if not the same), but harkening back to my nomenclature rant earlier (snotty , I admit, but I'm a firm believer in social tone) , I prefer not to converse with people who have screen monikers of Nazi party martyrs. Why not a screen name of "Heydrich" or "Goebbels" ?
    13. yee Gods- 45 years too late and the worst design I have ever seen. Why not just have a wounded smurf instead?
    14. ......... and one from the ribbon bar article (Have you seen it yet?)... Oberst Johannes Oehenichen from Saxony, born 31.12.?! Ta ! Jeremy!!!!
    15. ooooh- I saw one years ago for $100 or so. I always liked Saigo, but it was too expensive for me even then. Oh to go back in time though.....
    16. "Rittmeister und kompaniefuhrer (?)......something....something...zB"?
    17. The Hohenzollern House Order was given for very, very brave and noteworthy feats to (mostly) junior officers. If this bar did not have the spange I'd say it's a pre-1935 piece and then show you a great photo from 1925 of a Hauptmann with this combo. Certainly the patina and construction look good, but the HKx was ubiquitous, easy to obtain (and cheap) and it should be there. Maybe the chap had a separate HKx bar next to his "original" bar and upon recall in 1940 wore them next to each other, but it's incorrect the way it is. IF ITS ORIGINAL , the only way I can figure this happening is that its a jr. officers' bar that gets put into a box in 1919 or thereabouts and pulled out upon general remobilization in late 1939. Our ex. Lt. gets a bump to Hauptmann but being uninterested never got his HKx .....and LS medals are stopped for the duration. Upon the fall of France he gets another EK2 for his trouble and viola- .............. As Rick R's ribbon bar article demonstrates, odd things happened. But, it's a stretch and personally, I doubt it. I don't like stretches. I think someone added the eagle spange.
    18. Well, if that's the case I'll leave the Liverpoolmedals one for you. However, next time....now that my income tax refund has come back..... The one you got looks like an earlier (German made?) strike. Have you weighed them all? Are there variations?
    19. wicked nice. Now that you have slaughtered me on eBay. Would you like to sell me that Palestine campaign medal? I didn't really want the 1939-45 campaign medal.
    20. You agree to what? Why isn't there an HKx? If the spange is real-there MUST be an HKx.
    21. Great thread! (How did I miss this earlier?)....did the medal bar come with the jacket?
    22. ... but, I wasn't completely kidding....creeping annexation, even in chat rooms, hrummmph!
    23. Egad-it's 1922 all over again. partition, independence..... So long as Northern Irish medals remain in the UK forum section, I'll vote aye too.
