    1. I think its real and I think it went to one of these guys-trains!:
    2. well, the Hamburg chapter of the DVRG is on facebook! Perhaps they have a historian.
    3. whoa- obviously someone who was in from 1940-1970 (+) and ended up a Colonel (+). Any chance one can see how many DCMs there were?
    4. Oooooh! St. Georges' Cross! That means potentially research-able!
    5. The war cross (#!) was a bravery award? I had no idea! I see these at shows all the time and like the design.
    6. Unglaublich! Alle dieser Orden und Ehrezeichen heir sind, wie sagt man, "jaw dropping" auf Deutsch?
    7. can we see the cigarette cards? If there is a unit stamp on them....ALSO, do you know when and where he was captured?
    8. ...and the good news is that it may be traceable! Hamburgs' lifesaving awards are I believe are on a list somewhere. I remember seeing in the Journal of Lifesaving medals several years back an article on these city medals and seeing some sort of Hamburg roster. there can not have been many of the 1920s municipal life saving medals around. Anyone able to call the city's municipal department and find out if the archives have a list? Maybe the Hamburg chapte still exists.
    9. The badge is the BPFK badge-"fighters against capitalism and fascism ". The man is an old vet-apparently of the 1912/13 campaign I think.
    10. Yeah! I am jealous- here's a pic. Hunyadi sent me years ago...
    11. I thought the same thing as WC there, the "noncom/com campaign medal" was issued we know to medical persons in 1871 from documents-a bureaucratic snafu that occurred more than once. We can never be certain without a period photo, but the wear, the deliberate "long pin" to allow the cross to be hung in the middle (a lot of effort for an item that 5 years ago would have cost $1) and the patina of the middle veterans' commemorative cross (I think actually "issued/sold" before the campaign medals) would argue that it is original to the bar. Certainly older vets wore these things that way and often jumbled their medals together where they had some significance-like regimental issues etc. etc.. I think its very nice.
    12. Bloody heck! How did I miss this thread? -wow-food for thought there, but i think i may have a 'winner". I note that in Einsatzkommando murders the KVKx was awarded-but specifically NOT the EK. However...in some case "partisans"....let me go see what I have....
    13. can anyone guess why this Cuban veteran is so exciting? Take a look at his mid chest.
    14. Very cool Kev!! You know, you should write an article for the JOMSA-bios of these men would be really interesting.
    15. whoops! I misled you. The Kyfsrbnd. Ehrenzeichen is actually more like a "cap badge". I'll see if I can find a picture somewhere. The badges above are members' badges and Jubilee badges. The 40th year badge was issued in 1939.
    16. Bloody Heck! Now THAT was the type of woman that made Britain great! I wonder if she got the trio (Pip, Squeek and Wilfred) as well?
    17. A perfect little bar! I love it. Worn by some old Prussian codger in the 1920s-1940s. Obviously a veteran and probably in uniform @ 1897-but it wouldn't surprise me if he was some sort of businessman or local official. The Prussian war aid cross was given to all sorts of folks. I really like this one!
    18. Well, the short answer is "no" and the long answer is "maybe". The medal you show here is actually the Prussian Landeskreigerverband" Kreigsverein Ehrenkruez". This cross was awarded by the War Vets Association of Prussia to its most distinguished and loyal members. It was technically a separate organization from the Kyfyserbund, which was and is a national veterans organization. However, after the "coordination" of the veteran's groups by the Nazis-beginning in 1934, the veterans groups were a little confused. There are groups out there with ironclad provenance with these awards-technically "banned" or "disallowed' by the decrees of 1935 (and early 1936 confirmations) being awarded as late as 1940! Apparently there was some "wiggle room". The ACTUAL Kyfserbund 2nd class award is NOT the long service award shown at the top. The "Fuhrer" of the Kyfyserbund created the Ehrenzeichen at the beginning of 1934. There were two classes: silvered and "vergoldet" and these were to be worn under medals on the left breast. the silver was given for a MINIMUM of 10 years membership/service and the gold for a minimum of 15 years service. Prussian Ehrenkreuz holders (like you medal) could trade them in for the Kyfyserbund badge (I can't fathom why they'd have done so). Technically the Kyfyserbund medals were withdrawn and "coordinated" by the Interior Ministry in 1935-but by the documents above you can see they continued to be awarded by local authorities. The Nazified version was introduced in @ 1936 and shown on the NSRKB armband. ("Reservisten in Baden: 1981-pp. 48-)
    19. Wonderful collection! I LOVE the stars. May we see the bar close up? Thanks,
