It's uncommon but not something I'd call desirable although some might like the link with Hitler's birthplace. The man's surname still exists there.

Could it be linked to Norway in any way? They were still awarding their own EK's after the capitulation for the mine clearance operations? Or maybe the paperwork wasn't completed in time and they have been verified by a post war organisation in the same way some RK's were.

Goerings Grenadiers by Antonio Munoz covers all the LW Feld-Division histories with about 3 pages covering the period you seek and trying to uncover the confusion about what survived and where they were assigned. It would seem that the Russians were aware of the poor combat value of the division and planned their offensive to actually target it and the other weak units in the area. During the divisions retreat the Russians sliced through the retreating columns. An Army High Command report for 19th January 1944 stated that communications had been lost with 9.Feld-Division (L) (Mehner: Die Geheimen Tagesberichte Volume 9) with the division having been wiped out on the night of the 19th January north of Krasnoye Selo and Ropscha. Based on the narrative in that book it would seem that the majority of the survivors came from the rear area troops of the division with survivors eventually being assigned to various other units including 126.Inf.Division. The 9.Feld-Division (L) admin section was absorbed by the newly formed 20.Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS while a number of truck supply units from the both 9.& 10. Luftwaffe Divisions were absorbed by 3.SS-Panzerkorps, 11.SS-Nordland Division and the SS Nederland Brigade ( NARA - T-311 Roll 72 which has a number of Heeregruppe Nord Ia entries for 14th March, 5th, 10th, 19th & 21st April.) But as for the combat effectiveness of the division, which was poor to begin with, it effectively ceased to exist after the third week of January 1944.

Chances are that it's FJR-1 but as it has been written out by a medical unit it isn't rare for the unit entry to be confusing or wrong.

Can't say that I know of where to look but would the German Embassy be able to help with a list? Not sure where such a request would lay with regards to the German data privacy laws but it isn't as if you are asking for addresses of family etc. This book might be helpful. The 1938 Stellenbesetzung shows a Hauptmann Pfeifer which I would say matches that signature.

Unfortunately, without looking in to the records it won't be possible to determine what unit he belonged to. At one time or another there would of been a few Pionier related units based on Guernsey. Some examples being: 4./Festung-Bau-Btl 157 Stab & 1./Bau.Pi.Btl 158 3./Brücken-Bau-Btl 521 Eisenbahn-Bau-Btl 511 2./Festung-Bau-Btl 152

Johann Buckreus died on the 4th February 1942 and is buried on Guernsey at Fort George cemetery in St. Peter Port in Grave 68. He was born on 4th October 1906 in Haag am Hausrueck and held the rank of Oberpionier when he died. Just out of curiosity, why do you think it is a U-Boat commander? Kapitän zur See is too high a rank for a U-Boat commander and possibly too high for a U-Boat Flotilla commander, especially wartime.

I don't think there are any files at NARA for non-Officers (except possibly SS) and in terms of awards the DKiG holders don't seem to get anywhere near the same exposure as RKT. NARA has pension files for RKT but as far as I know it doesn't have details for DKiG winners. Even in specific unit history books it is not uncommon for the winners of the DKiG to get no mention at all - over 24,000 were awarded so it isn't surprising considering how relatively common it is. Your best hope would be to contact Deutsche Dienstelle and request a copy of his service details and hope that the person at DD who receives the request is one of those who doesn't stick to the letter of the law. However, considering that there are 75 'Wilhelm Grimm' listed as being killed in Volksbund you will need his date, and possibly place, of birth to stand any chance of them locating him in their files.
