Paul R Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 Jason,What is the first medal on that bar? Awesome stuff guys! These early bars are definately attention getters for me!
Jason Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 Gday Paul, the first medal is the Duppel Cross.cheersJason
Paul R Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 Thanks Jason!I did a quick search and could not find anything on this site about it. What was it awarded for? Valor award?
Jason Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 (edited) Gday Paul, I have some information somewhere in the chaos of my desk about it, but i'll have to rely on memory. If i'm wrong i apologise! It was awarded to troops who took part in the assault on the Duppel Redoubt on 18 April 1864, so it was more like a campaign or battle award. The official award version was struck in white bronze, and (this is really pushing the brain!!) there were just over 31,000 awarded. I remember an exact figure was given on another forum, but just can't quite remember it! If anyone has anyhting to add to this, please do!! cheers Jason Edited March 18, 2006 by Jason
Tom Y Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 Here?s a short article on the battle There was a similar award for the Battle of Alsen
Tom Y Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 Back to the original subject, here are a couple mounted in groups

Then there were two rather unique variations. First, this medal was also awarded to ?reserve? troops - again, the same medal but on, yet again, a third ribbon. Then there is the exceptionally rare iron variation made of blackened iron which was on the combatants ribbon. As I understand it, these were awarded to medical peronnel, clergy and civil servants.A similar format was followed with the Alsen crosses, one of which is pictured in post #39.Best wishes, Wild Card
