Nice cases, especially the early ones. I've always thought the burgundy were the first. I have two cases, one for a mid war KO cross and the other that is a private purchase case holding a square marked cross.

This book is a must for anyone interested in the Turkish War Medal. It provides a wealth of background material wrt the award including a look at the decrees that established it. The book has a picture of the prototype award as per the decree which, thank God, they did not adopt. The book shows numerous examples, both awarded types and the enamelled versions favored by European recipiants. The book also explains the campaign bars that we find attached to the ribbons. A nice, concise read. This book is chock full of facts and no fluff.

I think there is an outline of a laurel on the MVO ribbon. Perhaps there are pin holes in the black stripes????

While I'm sure the idea of using a piece of driving band to make something for a loved one back home I always knew the majority of them were "manufactured." They are too consistant to be random bits of salvaged bands. They had enough time on thier hands to make all kinds of stuff. Most of it was probably for front line use though and not gifts for the folks back home.

Unfortunately, still a supposition.

I would think the simple answer was that the badges arrived with vague wearing instructions and some officer made a call and said put them on like this. It was probably more important that they be uniform. And since they were uniform that was good enough and no one questioned it. Of course, my deduction is no better or worse than anyone elses.
