peter monahan
Great find, Chris! Unrelated question: is the mounted soldier in your photograph Black? Or is that just my aging eyes and the photoreproduction of my cheesy laptop?
Bayern
Peter : I think that the mounted man is an officer ,almost certainly a Hauptmann . and so impossible to be black . to me the man exhibes a brutal sun tanning ,produced by many days marching under the heavy sun of the european summer. i had seen other photos of officers and men resting without headgear and the contrast between the colour of the brow with the rest of the face is notable . Bayern
Hello : All right , black men served in the imperial german Army , not only in the Schutztruppen . but not as officers , at most as kettle drummer , musicians or bandmaster , and the man with dark face pictured is a officer and mounted what implies he is at least a kompaniefuhrer,

Chris Boonzaier
Another Leib Regiment Stein, this for the Leiber association, it has a nice version of the member rosette on the lid, the design on the Stein is the same as the one on the membership certificate. The Name Ludwig Ganser is engraved in the rim, the joined in August 1914.
