JimZ Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 I've studied the larger scans and if I had to make a call on these two medals I would say that they are both repros/fakes.Sergei is right in saying that basing oneself on scans is not the most reliable way of authenticating a medal or order. However, there are usually little tell tale marks which give can help to reaching conclusions and based on what I can see I would not go for these medals myself.Sorry if this is not what you may want to hear from us guys but its always better this way. May I ask what you paid for these medals as they are not exactly the cheapest ones around......Jim
Sergei Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 Jim, Are you referring to my larger scans or OoV's scans? If it's mine, do you reckon both of my pictures are fakes? Between the two of us we posted too many scans! Thanks,Sergei
JimZ Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 Hi Sergei,I am referring to OoV's scans. YEs it does get confusing sometimes Jim

Guest Darrell Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 They are NOT cheap. The documented pair I showed to start the thread off cost me:1st Class Documented = 350 US$2nd Class Documented = 325 US$That was about 1 year ago.
JimZ Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 Precisely Darell! My point is that I was just hoping OOV did not pay a fortune for them!!Georgia & Latvia amongst other states seem to be churning out some good fakes at 'tempting prices'. The buyer thinking he's on a winner .... well frankly gets shafted! Jim
Eric Gaumann Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 (edited) BTW does any one have any suggesions why these are full scratches Order of VictoryMy guess is they are casting flaws, and since the original medal was struck and not cast that would make them copies. But I'm not an expert.I should post my PM1 here. Hang on.... Edited February 14, 2007 by Eric Gaumann
Eric Gaumann Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 And closer-up of the medallions:I believe (as told both other, more knowledgeable folks) that this is a fairly good copy (aka Fake). The less than crisp details on the faces (moustaches, collars, tie knot) are bad points although there are other details that I do think are good.I'd love to hear other opinions though so please gimme your best shot.
Guest Darrell Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 Hello I believe these are fakes as well.
Gerd Becker Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 Hi Eric.i agree with Darrel, thats not an original. Maybe i should add, the copies of the Partisan Medal are damned good sometimes..Gerd
JimZ Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 Hi Eric.i agree with Darrel, thats not an original. Maybe i should add, the copies of the Partisan Medal are damned good sometimes..GerdWithout a shadow of doubt! Cast copies and at first glance, the quality of the relief and suspension rings are very clear evidence that these are not original.Jim
Ed_Haynes Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 (edited) A Partisan 2nd class, now "extracted" from a "group thet wasn't a group" (but with which I am very happy anyway!). See: http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=16257&hl=2279019.I think I suspect the judgment, but . . . ???? Obverse: Edited October 25, 2007 by Ed_Haynes
Bryan Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Nice salty medal as I like them! Ed do you have any other partisan medals in your collection or you are expecting to find one in a group one day?
Ed_Haynes Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Nice salty medal as I like them! Ed do you have any other partisan medals in your collection or you are expecting to find one in a group one day? This is the only ONLY one. Came "rogued" into a "group" (as referenced above), but my peculiar joy lies in groups (with HISTORY), and partisan groups are almost too good ever to hope for (these dark days of Soviet collecting). But is it "kosher"??? About these medals, I have much fear.
Bryan Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 I'm sure not the specialist in that field, but your medal seems "Kosher" to me!
Paul R Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 Are they really this expensive now?!?! http://www.collectrussia.com/DISPITEM.HTM?ITEM=17476

For that reason, it has become widely faked. Hence, my questions about my second class. Edited October 27, 2007 by Ed_Haynes
Guest Darrell Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 While Igor's prices always tend toward the high end of the curve, ........Ed, I think that's the understatement of the year. I got the documented one for ~ $350 within 18 months ago. Price gouging and a monopoly on the market is what I call those ridiculous prices
Bryan Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 I'm sure a second class like Igor's one wouldn't even get to $500 on eBay.
Ferdinand Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 Absolutely, it's an ugly medal - fine condition, ugly red oxidation, new ribbon...
order_of_victory Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 . For that reason, it has become widely faked. Hence, my questions about my second class. And the more money they bring the better the fakes will get Order of Victory
RedMaestro Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 Two partisan medals just sold on ebay. The 1st class was $280, and the 2nd class $171.50. The links are below if you want to look at the pictures.http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...bayphotohostinghttp://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...4.cWAT.m240.lVI
matteti Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 My Partisan 1st Class, unfortunately not documented.
