The frog it came with on the right hand side here... http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=18622 Before it arrived the mystery was the stamp Looked like 1.P.Z.35 Once it was here it was obvious they had stamped the "2" upsidedown and it was 1.P.2.35

Hi, can anyone identify the frog on the right? It came with a WW1 German bayonet...

P.S. the 233, 234, 235, 236 were all in the 51st Reserve Division and came from the 11th Korps district.

Hi, I have done some research into these units, these being the XXVI rk. The 233 RIR was one of a batch of volunteer regiments that was formed, trained and shipped to the front within a couple of months . "Trained" being a bit of a joke as they learned little more than how to point and shoot their rifles. They were decimated at the 1st batle of Ypres, called the slaughter of the innoccents by the germans. legend has it that the men of these regiments were all young volunteers from schools and university, there were indded many of these volunteers in the units, but also regular volunteers (workers, farmers etc). I have a number of Iron cross documents to men of the regiment, will hopefully add an article about them to the webpage at some stage soon...

If I understand correctly, there were quite a number of ex German soldiers who settled in South Africa in the 1870s, 1880s and who recieved medals for the Zulu wars... may be some interesting stories there....

I used to have a couple of pics with Luftwaffe guys wearing them. My guess was there were some with Afrikaans writing in them, or an Afrikaans name... and it was considered "Dutch".

As a document collector... I think its the way things should be !! Forget the medals!!! Give them paper!!!

...as far as the EK goes... as far as the combnation goes, much, much scarcer.

Do you know anything about the "Dutch" tropical helmets sometimes worn by the Afrikakorps?... if so... hit us with a thread about it... I think they may be South african instead of Dutch.

My theory, and noone has really challenged it..... The white ribbon was awarded WITHIN Germany, NOT to non combattants outside of germany. Then... I had a doc group... KVK2 with swords, KVK2 without swords, KVM. The KVK with swords for bravery in an airraid, the KVK wo swords for service as a Blockleiter, the KVM for work as a locksmith. Soooooo.... the possibilities are endless with the bar.... an Official in a factory (or similar) in WW1... bravery in an airraid for the KVK with swords.... Whatever... a niiiiiiice group!

I just found an old briquet sword here in bogoto with "policia national" etched on the balade. In one side is the Eickhorn squirrel, a single ring around it with CE at its feet, the other side "Carl Eickhorn" in an arc shape with "Solingen" written under it in a straight line... any idea of the age? Then came the terrible first version of the terre de France...

I am on a shaky computer link, so this will be redone later... But here for now... After years on the backburner, here is a roll of the mounted brigade officers in the South African forces in East Africa in WW1. I think it is a great "at a glance" reference as with a simple pair or trio there is no indication as to whether the officer served in East africa or not. E.G. I have a trio to an NCO who served in South West Africa. His records have been misplaced in the pretoria archives, so this roll was the only confirmation that he served in East Africa as well.
