Bundesrepublik bundeswehr collection
speedytop replied to a topic in Germany: Post 1945: Bundesrepublik & DDR
Hi Gordon, the flight surgeon badges are always in silver. This is the (basic) surgeon badge. Therefore he could have (and wear) the Bronze, the Silber or the Gold "Tätigkeitsabzeichen Fliegerarzt", based on his service time as a German flight surgeon (Fliegerarzt). Bronze > staff officer flight surgeon, after completion of initial flight surgeon qualifications, Silber > as above and 50 flight hours and 5 years of service as flight surgeon, Gold > as above, but 75 flight hours and 10 years of service as flight surgeon. Hi Tom, not the wound badge, that must be direct behind the EK 2. It could be for example the Drivers Proficiency Badge (Kraftfahrbewährungsabzeichen). Uwe -

DKFA > Deutsche Krieger-Fechtanstalt The badge is for the lowest "rank" in an honouring system > Fechter. With "Fechten" is here not meant fencing! "fechten" is an old German word for "betteln" > begging The members of the organization are begging for orphanages. The more donations they begged, the higher the award. There had been other organizations like this, e,g, the "Fechtanstalt des Deutschen Kriegerbundes". Please see page 116 - 121 scroll up and down: http://books.google......ndes"&f=false Uwe

DDR Athletic Honorings
speedytop replied to speedytop's topic in Germany: Post 1945: Bundesrepublik & DDR
Yes, there are many hundreds of these medals, not listed in the book from Bartel! The medal is from the time period 1969 to 1979, because it is the TUS Prora (TUS > Technische Unteroffizierschule „Erich Habersaath“). Since 1979 it is named MTS Prora (MTS > Militärtechnische Schule „Erich Habersaath“) Uwe -

Hi Ulsterman, "Any examples to British fellow travelers perchance?" You mean the official "Sportabzeichen (Sportleistungsabzeichen) der DDR"? I don't think so! You must first have knowledge about different DDR organizations like FDJ, FDGB or the "Nationale Front". Please try it with a young British woman . "Is there a book on these badges at all?" Yes: Frank Bartel, DDR Spezialkatalog Band VI, Auszeichnungen der Sportorganisationen der DDR, 3. Auflage 2007 300 pages with more than 2,300 numbers, many of them with subgroups. But the book don't include all sports awards of the DDR! The pieces from Post 1, 2, 5 and 6 are included, but not the other medal and not the documents. "What were the requirements for the DDR sports badges?" Very difficult to explain (in English). Here is a scan from an early "Sportleistungabzeichen" in 1951, level II (from 3 levels) for men: -

Maximilian Gritzner on Persians Orders
speedytop replied to JapanX's topic in Middle East & Arab States
Hi James, Persian awards are not my field of knowledge. But: "If he says such different things to different people reading him, he must be wrong somewhere along the line!" ?????? I'm a German, and I'm able to read German. Gritzner wrote nothing like "With the Fifth class the ribbon is blue for Persians, green for foreigners and for "Berfer" ( can't find translation) red or white ribbon." If someone is not able to read and to understand German, especially the old script, see "Berfer" instead of Perser, and others agree with the wrong interpretation, than I think, that we must find another base for discussions. For what is it good, to quote with old regulations in 1836 and 1856, when we are writing here about the Gritzner from 1893. There are new regulations in 1872: "A major modification of the order in 1872 simplified the variety of classes and degrees down to a manageable, five. The differences between awards to foreigners and Persians ceased, though the military and civil divisions and the different coloured ribbons remained." Gritzner wrote in 1893, that the "Löwen- und Sonnenorden" had the same rank system as the French Légion d’honneur (hinsichtlich der Klassen rangierend genau mit denen des französischen Ordens der Ehrenlegion). Therefore it is not the lowest class for a colonel as before, see the regulations from 1836 and 1856! In the here linked sources I cannot find anything, that is against the assignments from Gritzner and Mericka. But I can find a comment about the 1856 firman: "The 1856 firman is extremely confusing in that it tries to deal with the extension and modification of the Order of the Lion and Sun, at the same time as instituting the Decoration of the Royal Portrait. The paragraphs dealing with different matters are often badly set out and intermingled. Even the terminology is frequently haphazard." Uwe -
Maximilian Gritzner on Persians Orders
speedytop replied to JapanX's topic in Middle East & Arab States
Hi James, "So if he is wrong on the L&S, ..." Why is Gritzner wrong on the L&S? We can find the same description in Gritzner (1893) and Mericka (1969): Blue for the court, green for foreigners and red or white for (other) Persian citizens. He don't write anything about the grade of the award in combination with the different colours. Uwe -
