    1. Nice. A predecessor for what is now the Commandant's Letter of Commendation Ribbon. There was no wearable ribbon or medal for this citation back then. The ribbon came out in March of 1979. Super cool document! Is this the original citation, with original signature? I will give you two dollars for it now(LOL)! Super desirable, by me anyway!
    2. Those are some uncommon combinations. Nice finds.
    3. LOL! At least he did not drop the rifle overboard!
    4. Thanks guys! The Coast Guard Commendation began as a ribbon only award in 1947. The medal came out a while later, changing over to the current pattern in 1968. Despite the change of design, the Coast Guard kept using the first pattern version until stocks were completed. Captain Goode received this medal in 1972. He retired in 1974, after 30 years of service(excluding Academy time). I have that WW2 book as well. The Coast Guard members who received the Navy Commendation Ribbon are listed. This award was created in 1944. Thanks Lukasz, Here is my full sized version, complete with citation and press photo. http://gmic.co.uk/index.php/topic/61434-first-pattern-coast-guard-commendation-medal-with-citation-beyond-rare/?hl=%2Bcoast+%2Bguard
    5. I have never seen a Gibraltar set before Chris! This must be your new centerpiece set!! Congrats.
    6. How would someone earn all of these different organizational medals unless he served stints with each?
    7. Thanks Igor!! This bar was too good to pass up- especially for the offering price. The fact it was named was a real bonus!
    8. I really like this first pattern versus the pattern we use today. Today's version looks so plain in comparison....
    9. I want to share with you my newly arrived Coast Guard medal bar to Captain R. W. Goode. He was a veteran who saw much time overseas during WW2, as well as service during the Korean and Vietnam War eras. There are three things that make this medal bar special. 1- The seldom seen first pattern Coast Guard Commendation Medal. 2- The fact that this medal is also named. 3- The medal is mounted as part of an entire group, not just a separate part. I hope that you all like it.
    10. Totally amazing and complete grouping you have. I am completely envious. The photograph in his Soldbuch really adds a lot of appeal for me. I wonder what he did after the war. You are lucky to have this set!
    11. Interesting that it has the US style of plastic buttons. Reminds me of the post war US fatigue uniform buttons.
    12. 17 times... He is bound to have some major issues later in life. I hope that the government takes good care of him.
    13. Sounds like the person firing the rifle was not familiar with it and that it did not operate because the safety was on.
    14. I would classify these awards as personal decorations, as they are presented to individuals for specific acts or criteria. They are mid level awards. I would love to see images of these awards.
    15. Beautiful bar! How is a Red Cross medal awarded? Was it a membership item or was there some sort of merit attributed toward it. If I am not mistaken, the DRK WW2 era medal was awarded as a sort of long service medal in the DRK?
    16. Outstanding works of art!
    17. I would love to see an image of the pair! Can you post a pic?
    18. Ed is perhaps the foremost expert in this field!
    19. A Vietnam War group!! WOW. What medals are missing, according to the order booklet?
