joe campbell Posted January 26, 2006 Author Posted January 26, 2006 sachsen-meinigen militery merit cross, bronze,combatant ribbon.both are second class.bronze = earlier?zink = later?
joe campbell Posted January 26, 2006 Author Posted January 26, 2006 P.S.this is astroturf with significant snowfall...actually, courtesy of jeff floyd. thanks, jeff!joe
David Gregory Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 bronze = earlier?zink = later?Hi Joe,Your zink medal is in very nice condition. You are right about the earliest medals being made of bronze and the latest ones being made of zink. There were also bronzed versions made of a replacement metal issued at some time in between the two types. All of the ones that I have or have handled seem to have very good details.David
Daniel Murphy Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 (edited) Here is a ribbon bar of mine. EK2 with the Saxe-Meiningen military merit cross and a Turkish war medal thrown in for good measure. Was there a way to differentiate between the officer and the enlisted versions when on a ribbon bar? Dan Murphy Edited January 27, 2006 by Daniel Murphy
Daniel Murphy Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 Here is a Lippe-Detmold War Merit Cross "For honor in war".Dan Murphy
Ed_Haynes Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 A nice thread. One of my interests lies in these EK "parallel" awards. A number of items over on my "my collection" thread show specimens and a crorr-reference might be in order here:http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=4129Ed

Chris Boonzaier Posted November 24, 2006 Posted November 24, 2006 It was hard, but I'm better now You mean this one?Indeed yes... the Hessen EK2 !
Solomon Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 Here is my contribution...Indeed the war merit cross Lippe-Detmold is a "parallel" award to the EK II ...but there don?t exist different classes The often called "1st class" is the war honor cross for heroic deeds Lippe-Detmold, but there was no need to award the war merit cross before! The heroic deeds cross maybe comparable with this EK I Prussia...GreetingsSolomon
Solomon Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 And a look into my family-photos...This one shows my great grandfather...he was a sailor in WW I.At his ribbon-bar you can see the EK II and at the third position the FA-cross Oldenburg...another parallel award.GreetingsSolomon
joe campbell Posted November 25, 2006 Author Posted November 25, 2006 solomon-very fine two place bar, but i like the picture even better!were you able to meet him?joe
Solomon Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 Yes, but he died, when I was six.I have over 120 (very rare) photos from him, when he was a sailor on the "SMS Danzig" and about 20 -30 photoswhen he was in the army in WW II (Infantery -tank hunter). With these "Marine-Feldpost"-letters and photos I was able to identify the FA-cross Oldenburg, he awarded in WW I.But I?m still searching for the documents of his awards...There is no hint on his career on u-boat, exept a few photos which show his Imperial u-boat-award.(I have his original award in my collection)GreetingsSolomon

Hauptmann Posted December 23, 2006 Posted December 23, 2006 Hi all,Here's my contribution... Mecklenburg-Schwerin: Friedrich Franz Military Merit Cross 1.kl/2.kl.And my original post for anyone interested... I've redone scans as I didn't have my scanner at the time I originally posted these. And I discovered that somehow the part of the post I'd done on the 1.kl had disappeared.http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=8419...mp;#entry133088Dan
