    1. ah- a misreading of the text on my part then, "The 4th class had a rosette upon the ribbon. In war time the order was awarded upon the military bravery ribbon for acts of bravery".
    2. I bought this at a boot sale with a battered picture of a chap wearing what appears to be a Bulgarian uniform @ 1918. But what is it? It contains 3 years worth of stamp places for some organization. It came from an estate in Worcester, Mass. Anyone recognize it at all? Dave Danner?
    3. Oh by the way-there's supposed to be a rosette: @ 1939 -5th +6th classes in wear, on peace time ribbons:
    4. #1 is maybe earlier I think- @1855-1865. The tied cravats/neck tie were in style about then and went out by 1865 (by in large), " even in the provinces". Note also the "Napoleon" style face hair. He looks like a Dickens character. I suspect medal #2 of being the Baden Kreigshelfdeinst cross for 1871 though, as the ribbon seems to match-as does the curvature of the arms of the cross. the tops apparent curve bothers me 9as the medals' rim at the top and bottom are suposed to be flat), but perhaps it is a camera trick of the light. Might #1 be the Baden field (campaigns) medal for 1849 (no bar)?
    5. This is the 4th class (as it says on the lid). The medal is superb. The order was created in 1900 and these Orders were allowed to have the war ribbon from 1916-1918 and awarded for acts of bravery in the field. they are EK1 equivalents. Considering the pounding Bulgaria took (VERY high casualties, esp. amongst jr. officers and NCOs) and the battles it troops took part in, this was [probably a very hard won medal.
    6. a gentleman on the WAF has put out a CD with the DRK ranklists for 1939 and 1940 on them from the NARA. They have DRK personal numbers as well as some awards.
    7. He didn't qualify for any campaign medals, wasn't in the RAD to get their medal. the LS Wehrmacht medals were suspended in 1940 (?) and apparently his CO didn't rate him a KVKx, the usual reward fro Nachtrichten troops, but instead gave him an EK1: probably merit rather than bravery. Note where he was from November 1941 to July, 1942! He didn't have any wounds-so no wound badges and apparently he did not partake in any direct assaults-so no GAB for him. Not a bad war really.
    8. very nice-esp. the signals intelligence during the "English and American attacks against Germany". Apparently sitting behind a radio somewhere listening in.....
    9. wow-Glenn-you da' man! Clio smiles upon her diligent son. Is there a list for 1919 or 1920? I'd be curious to know how many EK2s on weiss/schwarz bands were listed amongst navy bureaucrats.
    10. Isn't this an RAD promotion document? A quick google search shows Smoling was a bit a quack, but did research on the environmental aspects of cancer.
    11. Theodor? Theodor? I suspect what you have is a second row bar here. The medals are all "eminent citizens" awards and were widely awarded, many to party apparatchiks and bureaucrats. However, Theodor will be able to tell us more.
    12. Thanks owain: Is there a ribbon chart available? Have you done an article on these at all? Does the ribbon bar above make sense?
    13. Web55-can you let us know which library? please feel free to pm me. I think I know by the "copy 1" tag as I have a deaccessed volume somewhat similar.
    14. eBay presently has a series of modern Yemeni medals on offer out of Lebanon. I was surprised to see three different versions of the 20th Anniversary medal.
    15. No-look at the medals etc. I suspect our Muldheim chap will be ecstatic to see him. That's the crown Princes' ADC: ADC cords, really nice neck order (but what-Thuringian?), the REALLY interesting and rarely worn Schnalle.
    16. Great photos- #2 I think was taken @ 1865: look at the weapons. Those are very early landwehr-almost Napoleonic looking. #4: wears the 1870 campaign medal-on the "at home" ribbon and given the size of the navy at this time (small) is rather rare. #9 1866/1870 campaign medals (nice medal bar) #9a Hohenzollern 1849 campaign medal? The Austrian pilots photos are awesome #13 was taken in the fall of 1933, when The SA incorporated the Stahlhelm and held a series of "assimilation parades". the Crown prince was sniffing around hoping for a monarchical restoration. I reckon about half the SA in that photo were dead by next Fall. Very nice photos-especially that Landwehr shot and the navy pic. (and of course the Austrain pilots). Should you ever wish to sell..... Would you be so kind as to magnify the medal bars on the SA photos? Thanks, QS
    17. well, an exact and precise number like 693 means that there's a list somewhere deep within the Eiran Treasury archives. There was a post some while back regarding an ex-RIC officer who was repeatedly requested to verify IRA/IRB or Cumann membership by locals who hadn't done a thing in the 1920s so as to obtain a pension. I think a search will reveal that story. I would bet a Euro or two that the majority of the 693 (+) were 1921 war medals without a Cormac bar though-
    18. very nice! I like them. Did train people wear them on their uniforms every day?
    19. vatjan-have you seen Hendriks' site? http://users.skynet.be/hendrik/eng/FColonialintro.html
    20. Thanks Hendrik. I had a quick snout round your web site and a few secondary "WW2 in Africa" books and the blockade is for what is today called Djibouti -which will bring back many happy, hot memories for Chris B. I'm certain. It appears as if the medal was locally (well, African anyway) tuna-can style made as it's lighter than most, but despite the apparent battering, is quite a nice war time piece. A nice little memorial to a forgotten "campaign": far, far away and a long time ago'. Thanks to RickR for showing it to me! By the way-your web site is great!
    21. Ah- jetzt verstehe ich...so for an NCO the prussian EM was in last place.
    22. Why isn't it a frack bar in your opinion:the trapazoidal construction or precedence order of the medals? To me, frack means the order in which they are mounted. This man is a feldwebel-collar tresses, big button on collar, enlisted straps, sword knot etc.
