Utgardloki
What a stunning, perfectly made bar, your pieces are alwys fantastic Very interseting is that it took 24 years after becoming Leutnant to get hist first decoration (except the Centenary), knowing that tells us again to appreciate small cheaper groups as much as these stunning ones, it took many years to earn them. Claudio
Thanks for your kind comments... yes, very interesting indeed that it took 24 years before getting an order! I'd be very nice though, to find Winkelmann's photo wearing his medals...
Claudius
What I think is really interesting is his first award (after the Centennial). Wichard must have been recognized as a rising star. Leutnant in 1893, Oberleutnant in 1900, makes Hauptman in 1907 and in October of that year recieves the Schamburg-Lippe House Order 3K! The Siam award comes soon after. In 1909 he picks up the Prussian Red Eagle 4K with Crown! He is being recognized by some influential people. I hope there is a photo of him. Well, actually all this orders were given very likely for his connections with Schaumburg-Lippe rather than real merit (he got also the Treu und Dienste Cross almost in the end of ww1). Strangely enough his SL3 wasn’t upgraded with swords... Furthermore the Siamese (Thai) order was probably given whilst receiving a visit of Siamese officers or Royal family members who participated to some kind of Pionier military maneuvers or workshop pre 1914. So all in all his connections helped boasting his array of decorations on his bar, more than some mere mortal Infantry officer at the front....? I have some beautiful and long bars which belonged to officers that haven’t even reached higher ranks than Major or Oberstleutnant, but they were able to get more exotic orders than even Generals, not to mention front officers! arb
Hello Claudio, As usual, your taste in bars is exquisite! As I have said before, a bar this nice deserves to have its original owner identified as fully as possible. So, here is his Wichard's pre-war career.
