    1. So, it's a diploma of Honor awarded directly by the King? Odd...as head of state he could have just forwarded a medal. Is this perhaps a unit honor diploma that has royal assent ("In the name of")? Hitler got a Bavarian regimental/Brigade Honor diploma.
    2. Meteroric rise in rank there for Herr Breitenfeld. From private to Lt. d R. in 6 months. Is that a change in status to "war volunteer"? I have no clue what award he got in Oct. 1918. Looks to me like he had one big wound. Is that IR 74 3 zug, 6 komp?
    3. Jeepers!!! Noor-where did you get THAT????
    4. wasn't that the subject of a Traditions magazine article back in 1968 or so by Brig. General Young ("Bear")?
    5. I reckon what you need is a Bulgarian generals' bio book....or maybe you plan on compiling one?
    6. I can attest (from trawling through several obscure Bavarian artillery units rolls) that it was quite possible for an "old soldier" to get only a Bav. MVK3x and naught else for an entire wars' service at the front. It was also possible for a dullard ( or someone naughty) to never make it past Gefrieter. As I recall from Ricks' postings, service (in regular units)in 14-18 was counted double time and Bavaria continued to hand out LS medals until 1920/21. I strongly suspect that Bavarian Reservists, war volunteers and Landwehr men also got the wartime double count. I have seen a couple of instances where reservists got the LS medals.
    7. Amos Bush, 2nd. Lt., 7th Bty. NY artillery
    8. Is that a special presentation set for someone?
    9. The booklet I have ends at # 16,650. sorry
    10. when you say "show and tell", you mean the secret archives might be opened?
    11. nice! :Cat-Scratch:
    12. That picture of Josef Schwarz is fantastic!! I assume he was some sort of Bavarian Red Cross Administrator/Bigwig.
    13. Uh- I have that BDOs magazine and while useful, it does not go into the detail of the Ludvigsen work. It tends to focus on Divisions. I believe I gave you Rick, a copy of this magazine? Also, isn't the GefechsKaladener on googlebooks? Most useful would be by Ludvigsens' "unit by Bars on campaign medal index" methodology I reckon:
    14. You mean 1943? He has the Ostfront ribbon.
    15. very cool: How many were awarded in each grade before the collapse?

very interesting thread. Has anyone contacted the UK manufacturer? I wonder what services the Zimbabwe medal was awarded for.
    17. I got this the other month off eBay: Interestingly, the bars' first award looks (to the naked eye) like a black/red/black ribbon. However, under the power of the scanner, the ribbon looks different: red/pink/red (?). I now think its an ORS. The last ribbon I believe is the Polish WW2 Victory + Liberation medal. What sort of person had this bar? A relatively undistinguished WW2 vet who then went into the work force at a senior level and picked up lots of Jubilees? @ 1990?
    18. hold on- Is Paul Schmitt dead? Did you write "estate of" Seb16?
    19. Stahlhelm : Landesfuhrer rank, I think. The upper badge is a Stahlhelm members' badge.
    20. a scholar and a gent.

    21. Doc: Third Reich Germany era: 1. Iron Cross 2nd class 2. Prussian Military Service/Bravery cross (the highest award an enlisted man could get-the "enlisted mans' Blue Max) 3. Oldenburg FA cross (equal of the iron cross 2nd class) 4. Hindenburg cross with swords-for service in WW1, swords denotes saw combat: established in 1934 and awarded through 1942.
