Djedj Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Greetings, Meet Herr Heinrich PRETZEL, who seems to have had some interesting years : Photo was taken in Gross-Tychow (now "Tychowo"), not so far from Danzig/Gdansk. Any chance to identify his other awards / decypher the comments / find out more about his service ? Cheers ! Jerome 1
Chris Boonzaier Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Wow..... that is a rare photo find! I can count the number of 1813 EK pics I have seen on one hand and still have a couple of fingers left over...
Marcin L Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Jerome - wonderful picture! I have never seen EK1813 in wear.
KIR Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 (edited) ... nice! Very nice!!! Thanks and best regards, Jens p.s.: why I can't find the name in the Ordensliste 1817!? See name-index here: EPN_1263261493_0592.jpg 1600 × 2508 Pixel Edited January 16, 2014 by KIR
paul wood Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 The photograph must have been taken after 1863 as he is wearing his Iron Cross, the 1863 commemorative War Merit Medal and the 1813-15 War merit Medal, the last is suspect is a veterans award, now you have to find a group to go with the photo. Paul

KIR Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 (edited) You need to use the German spelling....Brezel.... ;-) Chris, I checked this too - but also no Brezel/Bretzel...: EPN_1263261493_0533.jpg 1600 × 2451 Pixel ... also I can't find the name in the iron-cross Seniorenverzeichnis from march 1863. Gruß Jens Edited January 16, 2014 by KIR
Djedj Posted January 16, 2014 Author Posted January 16, 2014 Thanks gents for the comments, the explanations on the medals, and checking the name ! MMh, so there seems to be some mystery here ? Well sometimes names found on CDVs are dedications rather than signatures ; doesn't really look to be the case here, but that could be a lead... Cheers ! Jerome
paul wood Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Another possibility is that he enlisted under an alias (it frequently happened, due to debts, in trouble with the law or got a girl into trouble). certainly was the case with the British during the Peninsular war. Paul
azyeoman Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Wonderful photo! I hope others will add moren like it! Great thread! Thanks!
Chris Liontas Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Love it!!! Thanks for posting!! I had a photo of a chaplain with a non combatant IC 1870 that I wish I had not sold...... These photos are what make the hobby I think!
turtle Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Great and super-rare photo, thanks for showing!
Homerjey Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Wow, greate picture!!!! I have only this one, with EK2 1813 and Red Eagle Order 2. class. I hope you do not mind? Best regards Thomas
gregM Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 I am wondering what I'm looking at in the blue boxes. Is this just scratches in the photo? Or could it be some detail actually on the cross. It almost looks like writing of some sort but that's impossible to know.

But still a very beautiful photograph of a participant of the liberation war in 1813. Best regards, Jens
Djedj Posted July 4, 2014 Author Posted July 4, 2014 Hi gents, sorry I cannot get anything more detailed for the Cross ; but a badge looks possible indeed. Thomas, Thanks for this photo - very nice ! And... introducing another old Vet'.. Photo re-cut to fit in a 1860s album ; no photographer's détails whatsoever. I love the colouring ! Salutations, Jérôme

I have never seen a photo of a Napoleonic veteran with that many different decorations. Outstanding.
ixhs Posted February 10, 2018 Posted February 10, 2018 Those fotos are really rare. They are very hard to find. They are from the beginning of photography. My earliest photo shows a 1864 soldier after the war ended.
