Peter J Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 Thanks Mike, great comparison shot. I buy your theory about a long periodof production, accounting for the need of a 2nd obverse die.KRPeter
Gaffken Posted July 24, 2006 Posted July 24, 2006 Well, as my first post to this forum, I'll throw out a (semi?) tough one: if the swords and oaks to these awards were unofficial, what exactly did they represent, and/or what were they attributed to/awarded for? Additional quartiles of service? (ie, 6 mos, 9 mos, etc?)Everything else aside, that's one impressive set of Adlers you guys have! Many thanks,Gaffken
Guest Rick Research Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 They were enhancements for 1921 repeats of the same services for which the same grade had already been earned in 1919. I've never been clear on precisely WHAT a wreath versus the Xs "meant," but both arose in 1921.As to why the 1919 version COULD be worn but the 1921 could not-- and people who FIRST earned one in 1921 got the plain "1919" version anyway-- not sure. It may have been something complicated indicating that ONE of the same was a noncombatant (wreath?) while the other same class was for combat services (Xs?) but of course this did not clarify which was in 1919 and which was in 1921, looking at an enhanced Eagle.Despite the inexplicable ban on the 1921 versions, they certainly DID continue in wear as this tuxedo'd Christmas 1938 Nazi attests:
Ralph A Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Two Silesian eagles and two Hanseatic crosses? Was he Siamese twins?

Stijn David Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 Hello, Here is a newly arrived bar, a Freikorps vet with a long service afterwards and a exotic (Italian) enamel one as a plus. Cordial greetings,
Stijn David Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 Hello, And the Silesian eagle => a nice Meybauer it is Cordial greetings,
Eric K. Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Im really starting to get into these and this is the first one Ive ever came in contact with, it seems to be made very good, the question is, is it a good one?
Eric K. Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 heres the back.Ive looked around and the ones Ive seen are similar but not an exact match to mineThanks!!!!Eric
buellmeister Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 I'm by no means an expert. IMHO, it looks as though it is a cast copy.Regards,Joel
Chris Boonzaier Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Cast indeed.... but that does not exclude it.... it may make us a bit weary, but some of these between the wars things were clunkers.
Eric K. Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 I was afraid that it was cast at least I didnt spend too much on it,Eric
Guest Rick Research Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Eric-- it's an absolutely fine original. I prefer the metal 3-D feathers types like this, even though they do look like they were hand hammered out of spare auto parts. That's the way that most of them were. Fancier ones were private purchase upgrades. But even with those, if you want to see REAL "low bidder" products, check out the backs on most types of the black enamelled ones---
Eric K. Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Sounds good to me!! It sure looks cast and I was afraid it would be no good but I bought it anyways...looks like I lucke dout this time Thanks again !!!!Eric
Mike K Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Hi Eric,I'm late to this thread but I have a question. I don't mind it being cast - but is it cast IRON? Does it strongly attract a magnet? If so, I'd agree that it's more thna likely a nice early original. If not, I'd suggest it is a modern casting.RegardsMike
Guest Rick Research Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Not necessarily. There are 1919s that are some white metal alloy. These were produced by a number of makers, most of which are unidentifiable. Very definitely "low bidder" contracts. Even most of the deluxe (and non regulation) enamelled ones are truly awful on back.
Eric K. Posted February 16, 2007 Posted February 16, 2007 Hey Mike Its non-magnetic but I've seen a few around that are almost a perfect match an they were given the thumbs up.Thanks again guys!Eric
