    1. a LOVELY thread! the basics... gotta' start with the basics. perhaps some discussion of the kinds of awards and decorations bestowed: -long service -military merit/bravery -jubilee/anniversary -non-combatant/support roles i'm sure there are more... and i'm still not sure i understand the presence of multiple states/principalities/duchies and how you figure which is "precedent"... a lovely thread... joe

    3. i was able to pick up a bar or two from the gentleman who was selling these bars, and found ALL of them to be of fine quality and generally quite excellent condition. thanks for the great pix!! joe

    6. wide flange reminds me of K&Q. style would suggest private purchase, early production, and probably officer material. joe
    7. at least one application for this plate-back configuration was on the leather jackets of aviators, and , i suppose, other overcoats and field jackets. this is rather a pleasing predicament you've got on your hands, richard!! joe

    10. eric! i'm flattered! M. Bison- thank you for the site reference. mine is actually in better shape. while not perfect, the enamel has relatively few, and small, chips. the ribbon is ~10-12 cm with little in the way of fading. merci beaucoup! joe
    11. interesting thread and great pictures/information. can anyone give me an approximate value of a first empire, third type with original ribbon in very good condition? my thanks! joe

    13. i have to agree with david. the L/12 strike doesn't look good. the definition is poor throughout. not my cup of tea. joe

    15. i don't know that i'd jump so fast... these are often close calls. they look great to me, but I DON'T KNOW cuff titles too well.... paddy keating may have some thoughts, or other cuff fans. give it a little time, eric. joe
    16. handsome cross!! it almost looks as if the tips of the hooks had been filed (before OR after breaking??). bet those little pins could leave a mark... this is a cross i still lust after... joe
